Transmission type/shift problem

My GF has a 1980 F-150/4-speed-300 CI six. What transmission would it Have? The other day she drove the right front wheel over a pile of gravel and now the truck will not shift into 3r/fourth/reverse gears. It shifts just fine between 1st ans 2nd gears. Any ideas?

Regardless of the transmission, I would look at the body mounts. I see you are in CA and it should not be too rusted out, but I would check just the same. Pull the boot off around the shifter and see if the shifter is hitting the floorboard.

Is the shift lever on the steering column or on the floor?

He said 1980 with a 300 six and 4sp.
in 80 did they put the AOD with a 300 six?
Other wise it would have to be a manual transmission and should not make a difference granny first or over drive 4th.
IIRC only the OD has linkage on the outside of the transmission.
Yes I would start at cab mounts and transmission linkage for the problem.

This truck definitely does not have an OD. If you drive it above 60 mph it starts complaining. I need to check to see if it has an external linkage or not. This is a 300 CI six gas engine with supposedly a tow truck transmission. I also need to see if I can determine just what type of transmission it has. I was told be a Ford mechanic (Dieselmann) that he doesn't think there is any linkage. By the way, if anyone needs information about Ford diesels, Dieselmann is definitely the place to go. He helped me many times on my previous diesel pickup.

Sounds like a NP435 or a T18. Take that boot off and see if something has shifted around after hitting the rock pile.

Thanks again. I definitely need to see just what tyoe of box it has. The truck is at our ranch so I'll probably go out there later this week. Thanks again. By the way, since you have a diesel, check out a Ford mechanic called Dieselmann. He helped me many times when I still had my 88 F-250 with the 6.9/Banks turbo before it burned and I went to a94 Dodge Ram/Cummins/5-speed. Now all I need to do is part out the F-250 since the body is beyond repair. Nick Marks/Dublin, Ca

If it is a "tow truck transmission" then it would have a granny first gear.
The granny gear is only used if you have a heavy load you need to get going other wise you start off in 2nd gear.
Also 1st through 4th would be a normal H pattern and reverse to the right and back to the seat if the transmission came in that truck.

Being early 80's I believe it would be a BW T18 as that was what was in my 81 F100 with a 300 six.
The NP435 I believe come out mid 80's and is what I installed in my truck when I found the T18 was bad.
The 2 transmissions are a direct swap in my case.

Both have a granny first gear, do not have over drive or shift rods on the outside of the box.
If the body did not shift and hit the shifter stick to keep it from moving as needed then it has to be something inside the transmission but I cant really see that by driving over a gravel pile.

I wonder what is the cause?

She may not have realized it, but when it went over the rock pile it may have thrown her leg against the shifter and broke something in the transmission. Although you would think she would have a bruise there from that.
