It has just turned cold here in kansas city. My 97 PSD keeps burning up fuses when the glow plugs come on. The last 2 fuses didn't last 2 seconds-they burned up as soon as I turned over the key. The second one was a 40-amp (in a 30-amp circuit)!
Any suggestions? Plugs Shorted to ground? Bad wiring? Bad relay?
In the owners manual the glow plugs and the PCM are on the same circuit (Fuse #22 in power distribution box under the hood, drivers side). Could there be a problem with the PCM?
Disconnect the power to the glow plug relay and try another fuse. If the fuse holds, then you'll know it's somewhere between the relay and the glowplugs. You probably have a bad spot in the wiring that is grounding out.
Thanks CatMech, I know the heater looks bad and the wire has come unsoldered.
Today, it went like this. Glow plugs turned on fine and the engine started. Ran fine for a couple of minutes until I saw a draw on the voltmeter on the dash, then it died. Checked the fuse and it was gone again.
Do you still think it is the fuel heater?
Is the fuel heater synchronized with the glow plugs or does it just come on until the engine warms up?
I don't have my EVTM handy, but is it the #22 Maxi fuse under the hood? If so, it's the fuel heater shorting out and shuts the truck down. Disconnect the fuel heater and forget it. You really shouldn't need it in KC anyway.
If that doesn't do it, the valve cover gasket/wiring harness and the under cover harnesses are known to short/melt/generally go bad. You may have to track it down that way, easy to replace.
FYI, I carry a spare vc gasket/harness and an under vc wire harness in the truck.
It is the #22, 30-amp Maxi fuse in the fuse box. Last night I didn't plug in the engine heater, and I disconnected the fuel heater. This morning I started up with the glow plugs with no problem. Thanks for the advice and confirmation.
