On a long trip (600+) and about 100 miles from home got check engine light. No other warnings or anything. Couldnt find a way to read code without
reader so found (on a Sunday) Orielly's Autoparts and they read for me. Rig was tossing a P401 EGR. Read several places I was ok to go
for time being and I figured I would find a dealer where Im visiting to get it fixed. Continued on the trip and about 400 miles later and 2 Cleaning exhaust filter notes the check engine light went out..
Should I still have it checked ? Need to call them anyway as Im getting the Check Engine Coolant warning.
P401 is plugged up EGR(not enough flow). you want to get that fixed, the code will just come back again. When that code is present the engine derates the power, so if you are towing, you will really notice the loss of power. Not so much if just driving. EGR can be removed and cleaned, or if taken to dealer they will replace. EGR bolts are quite often very hard to remove due to the heat cycles. For me, that would be a dealer/private shop repair, as my luck, I'd bust a bolt, and be screwed.
An active P0401 will likely qualify you to a free repair from Ford under CSP 21M04 as long as you get it repaired by end of March 2023 April 30, 2023.
I provided a URL in this post where you can confirm if your VIN is eligible if you don't have an active Ford Owner's profile, so that you have the information for your dealer if it becomes a debate. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post20389086
Thanks, I do see that one under my 2011 6.7. Problem is I'm past the 11 years as I bought mine in December of 2010. Im at an out of town Ford Dealer
so Im not sure how I can handle it.
Ill try to contact the service manager to see what can be done.

You will qualify for the active exception which is valid to April 2023 where the 11 years or 120,000 miles restriction is bypassed.
Thanks for posting the letter with the info on the calculation. Sounds like something conceived by some mathy person and poorly translated to be only slightly less confusing. If makes me wonder if abnormal driving conditions could cause the calculation to be temporarily exceeded in a vehicle that otherwise wouldn't have an issue. I also couldn't tell if the equation adapted to a specific vehicle's typical use (I don't speak math).
All that to say that I got a 402 code on an 800 mile trip around mile 500 when hauling my truck camper uphill at 6000ft elevation over 80mph. No other issues with anything ever, and the light went out a few starts later, never to be seen again.
Is the vacuum pump bad? You have a 2011, those four bolts are known to loosen and make a mess of oil everywhere. 89 in-lbs (10 Nm). I had to tighten mine and the problem has been fixed for four years. All it cost me was a little frustration getting to one of the bolts.

Dealer stated the Gaskets need replacing. Labor is 99% of the cost.
Unfortunately being stuck on the road 630 miles from home, Im at their mercy.
When it rains
No EGR in stock he found someone grabbed it before he got it
None available anywhere
I've called every dealer I can think of at home and around here. out of stock and two told me Ford has a Stop Sale order on it
and three said July at earliest.
Stuck in Redding CA Need to get to Everett WA .. And no truck
Dealer wont do aftermarket, no mechanics around.
Its too bad our ford rep left the board.
Seems like if it was such an issue of replacement Ford would have a Recall, especially if the cooler is taking them out.
did you try to call autonation, white bear lake in MN?
Part showed up on dock without notification. Of course it was the day I left. Got truck
back. Back at home, now what is next. I know my last oil change the dealer
mentioned a Possible Power steering leak. Going to have that checked.

Same trip, one year later. Same code (or so I assume... haven't pulled it yet), but the conditions were almost exactly the same (500+ miles into an 800 mile drive, pushing wind at 80mph with a truck camper, at altitude). No symptoms other than the light. It'll turn off after 5 ignitions or so and I won't see it again until next year I'm sure, but figured I'd bump the thread in case anyone had any bright ideas.

Did you do anything from a year ago until now to fix? P401 is restricted airflow through EGR cooler. you need to pull it and clean it or replace it.

Sorry I wasn't more clear, but my code is actually p0402 (the excessive flow one). I initially piggybacked on this thread because the OP's similar driving conditions caught my attention.
