I believe these vans were pretty similar through '91, so if anyone has GCWR numbers for a newer E350, that may be in the ballpark...

thanx!

how does Tommy Lift affect towing cap?

GCWR = 13,000 (estimate - thanx, Horsepuller)
GVWR = 8550 (known)
actual vehicle weight = 6550 (guess - it's HEAVY)

Max safe trailer weight = 13,000 - 6550 = 5550lbs.
Thus, max safe tongue weight is about 600lbs.

There's a Tommy Lift installed on the back of the van (see gallery pix). Do i treat this as if I have a 350lb tongue pre-load? IE: Does this reduce my max safe tongue weight to 600-350=250lbs, allowing only a 2500lb trailer?

a little confused about how the Tommy Lift affects my towing capacity...

thanx.

I think you're right. It's going to affect how the van handles with that extra weight hung off the back end. But it's not really tongue weight since it's not putting strain on the hitch. At the same time, it's hard to consider it as normal cargo weight because it's so far aft of the normal cargo area.

A trailer around 5,000# is within the safe range to use a Class III or IV hitch without any equalizing bars. I would see how it handles first. Then be ready to add equalizing bars if necessary. The equalizing bars will help negate the tongue preloading effect from the Tommy Lift.
