I liked the 223 i6 for mileage but found I need more power using it as a truck. My 302 conversion was pretty simple and cost effective. I love the power and RPM band but I pay more at the pump. It really boils down to what you need and expect from your truck.
In a since yes, I'm a Coast Guard Reserve Warrant Officer and have been on orders since April 2019, Combination of California, GTMO and now in Ohio with multiple trips to NC. I will be retiring and headed back to the family in Oregon next year.
Thank you it will be over 32 years by the time I retire, 12 of which will have been on active-duty orders. I have been blessed to go to places and see things I would have never been able to without being part of the Coast Guard, but I am ready to retire.

Here's hoping the last year passes smoothly for you. Thanks again!

That is a long time! Thank you for your service, your next chapter sounds exciting too...
Hi all, I have read throught this post several times and since it isn't too old, I thought I would make a few points.
1) I have a 1955 ford F100 with a 223 six and a T98 4 spd tranny. The rear end ratio is 3.92:1. I have been driving this truck since the restoration in the early y2k. It gets about 15 mpg. I've done very little to it in the last 22 years. I'm still running points because they just keep going. I converted two tractors to pertronic ignitions but not this truck. It likes cruising at 50 to 55 mph. I used to run it at 70 mph in the 1980s.
2) I have owned two Ford trucks with the 300 and AOD tranny. They were 1983 and 1984 models. Both were great trucks. The 1984 got 19 mpg the last time I checked it. I liked the 300 six. Great engine. It does have a few more HP than the 223, around 170, I believe. Rusty, your HP is 126 per the VIN plate.
Rusty, If you are okay with the 223, keep it. However, I will suggest a Mustang T5 5 spd as none of the post suggested this conversion. John Mummert at ford-y-block.com has great info on this conversion. The overdrive will help with the mpg. I will also suggest a power disc brake conversion kit, available from midfifty.com, and others, more than likely.
You may ask, have you done these conversions? Fair question. In 2021, I bought a 292 Y block. As of this past April, I picked it up from a local rebuilder. It is ready to install. However, There were other things I wanted to do at the same time. These include, new springs in the front (down and forward), power steering (CCP) and power disc brakes. Now I'm struggling over the T5. It wasn't in my plan. The more I research, the more I want it.Overdrive would help with several things. Modern Drive Line has T5 kits. They don't have an adapter for my 4 spd tranny though. John Mummert can mod the bell housing, I think. I hope to talk to him this week.
I am waiting on parts that are back ordered due to COVID and whatever else. When I actually start the conversion, I will create a post for it.
I think an OD tranny would be awesome no matter what engine you decide to go with. I just bought a ZF5 for mine. No idea when I'll get around to getting it in, but it was a deal I just couldn't pass up.

Hi Byrd Dog,
Are you planning to swap the C6 in the 60 F250? What engine do you have? The ZF5 should should be an easy swap, I think.

My current engine/trans is the 400 & C6. If I'm keeping the auto, I need to re-gear. If I swap to an OD tranny, I can keep the 4.56's. Not quite a bolt-in swap - requires a flywheel spacer, as the flywheel for the 460 sits further into the belhousing than the 400. Still not sure yet, but for what I paid, I can get my money back on the ZF any time.

I have 3.92:1 ratio limited slip rear. So I'm looking at the OD for the same reason as you. The T5 from an 80 something to 93 Mustang can be used by modifying the Y block bell housing. The clutch has to come from a 65 or newer car/truck because it is thicker. And, I may need a few other things as well.
I think I can use a flywheel & pressure plate from a 400, but will need a 460 clutch disc that's 11" instead of 12. Knew I shouldn't have just given away all the manual tranny stuff when I pulled the 400 from the donor.
Byrd.Dog,
I wish I could help you with facts on the clutch and engines. Maybe you can start a new post and ask the questions. I would like to be lucky, like you, and find a T5 for cheap.
