My 67 has a three speed manual on the column. When I try putting it in first gear i get third and when i put it in reverse i get second so I looked inside the hood, and i can see that the linkage for second and third is moving but not for firdt and reverse. I can manually by hand on the side of the tranny and get reverse and first, so i determined that it was inside the column, I dont want to pull the column. Do you have any suggestions.
I would change it to a floor shifter, but my parents won't let me because it won't be original, I would save hunderds of dollars by puting in a floor shifter rather than rebuilding the column, but they won't listen
I do not think you are going to be able to fix it without taking the column out. The good news it that 45 minutes should have it sitting on the floor.
You will probably have to pull it apart to find out exactly what is wrong, but there are three bushings that hold go between and on each side of the two shift levers, and two bearings and two bushings on the shaft.
The columns are easy to fix, and cheap. The problem is probably right at the pivot point of the shift lever at the top of the column. You may be able to fix it without taking the column out but if you did take it out (and it's not hard) you could fix it all up and be good for a long time. There's not much in there and it's all real simple and cheap. If the truck is any good at all you will regret cutting it up.
I have the column out now, and I am getting ready to find the problem, will I have to have the bearings repressed by a machine shop, or will I be able to do all of the work myself, do you know anywhere to get the parts for a 67 ford truck steering column.
