I am working on 1987 F150 2wd 4 speed 6cyl Reg Cab 8ft bed pickup.
Been searching the forum to find why the fuel gauge is pegged past full.
I am waiting on parts to replace the rear tank and pump sending unit assy. it was parked 14 years ago because the rear tank was leaking.
It was running when parked off the front tank. Now the gauge is pegged past full on front tank. ( Front tank and fuel pump assy will be replace in very near future).
Got a new high pressure pump and tank switching valve on the way
Checking the switch on dash with MM it is switching the contacts to front/rear fuel pump and sender units as it should.
When I try to read the front tank resistance I get OL on MM and also reading the rear tank sender unit wire which should read OL with no sender attached correct?
What are the next steps to see if it is my cluster gauge or in the wiring.
OL is an open circuit so, yes, that’s what you will get with the sender disconnected depending on where you are measuring.
I was working at the tank selector switch on the dash that was easiest part to start checking. So either the front tank sender is bad also or a broken wire feeding the front sender.
Will have to wait until parts arrive to check sender wire on rear tank with new sender.
Well got new rear tank fuel pump/sender mounted along with new HP fuel pump and fuel filter truck running off of rear tank and gauge working.
Now the truck runs like crap hard to start. I checked fuel pressure it is 52psi at idle however it drops to 0 as soon as key is turned off. If I recall correctly the FPR should hold pressure for at least 5 minutes or so. So guessing that the truck needs a FPR.
Well got the FPR replaced today. It still as a surging idle and then dies. I am leaning towards TPS or IAC now. Will do some testing tomorrow on the TPS and IAC valves.
