Need help with new steering gear box. Ordered a new box from rockauto.com and the bolt holes on the steering gear didn't match old gear box, different size: Motorcraft STG-187-RM. This was the only Motorcraft steering gear offered from rockauto.com. Also, apparently the splines are different. DK.
I am too late to return the steering gear and will have to eat the cost if can't retrofit. Is there a way to make this work with different mounting bolts? Or, should I just eat it and order a new gear box. What are your suggestions for brand-wise?
Any information is appreciated. Fits 2008 Ford E250 5.4L 200,000+ miles. According to the door sticker it looks like my van was built on 12/07
You must do like me and buy parts that lay around like my PCM that is now out ow warranty! Have you tried calling ford and giving them your VIN number? Actually better to go to the dealer parts department so that you can engage them a bit better.
here is something that might help.
look at the the splines where the steering wheel shaft connects. it is different between the up to 10/01/2007 and the After 10/01/2007
Good ole RockAuto strikes again---one more reason I avoid them like COVID-19 masks!
I bought a reman'd box from NAPA but it was the Cardone brand, something I'd normally have avoided given a choice but it held up for the 60K + miles before that van was sold.
I don't know of a way to cobble together an installation of the steering box with the "wrong" parts. I'd carefully consider buying the proper box from a local store so you can return it if its not correct.
