Need opinions on my 01 f350 7.3. I feel like it gets bad mpg. Average is 11-12. All my buddy's I talk to get 16-18 no problem. It has a hydra tuner, shift kit, 5 inch exhaust with downpipe and intake. Runs and drives great. Wish it would shift sooner is my only complaint but it's in tuning. Anything I should look at? Just confused for how good it runs.
First...
Insure the truck is running at peak efficiency. Good fuel and oil, maintenance at top notch level. Tires inflated to truck weight specifications, maybe a touch over will give lower rolling resistance but will impact wear.
Tunes are usually not good for milage as you will tend to drive for effect.
Low resistance highway tires are your friend but you likely are using chunky off road tires on the highway and it shows on the mileage.
Lifts well that is not helping.
Next time you sit in the drivers seat have a good firm conversation with your right foot and make sure it understands it will be paying the bill at the pump if it misbehaves.
After all the above I will admit to having a 4 inch lift and 35/12.5/15 Pro Comp MT's and 4.56 gears with lockers in/ on my 1990 Bronco. When I behave I get about 9 mpg on the road if I keep it under 65 mph. It is my fishing and hunting vehicle. If I can not get there with my Bronco a horse is my next best bet and much more fuel efficient.
