My 94 Bronco 351 has had some problems cutting out while I am driving. When it rains, it cuts out for the first few minutes, some times up to 10 minutes when driving. It has also come on when it isn't raining, but I have hit mud puddles. This happens and the check engine light comes on some times. If I pull over, pop the hood and wiggle the plug wires to make sure they are on good, it runs fine again. It did the same thing again today when I hit a big mud puddle by the gravel pits by my house. I dropped a friend off at his house and it was cutting out again, the it just stopped. I don't know what is triggering this. I have replaced my plug wires, rotor, and distributor cap within the last 2-3 weeks. I don't think I am missing any splash guards or anything either. If anyone has had this happen, let me know please.
Check your #7 and #8 plug wires. Keep them apart. They are notorius for crossing over to each other. Other than that, check your ignition wiring from starter to battery to make sure there isnt any breaks to expose any wires that supply power. The water may drip on it shorting it out peridically. Also check the wiring coming through the firewall for the same problem. You would be surprised where water can get around the engine even with all the splash guards in place.
I live in Arizona, where it is DRY, and my 93' XLT 5.8 was also doing this. When going up mountains roads at first, it seemed putting a heavy load on the engine would cause the truck to sputter to a stop. After a year or two or this, it started to do it all the time, even when doing normal driving around Phoenix.
I finally talked to a couple different shops. They said it was my fuel pump that was causing it. I'm in the middle of changing the fuel pump right now. The design on the fuel system sucks though. So it's not as simple as it sounds...
Does your truck sputter to a stop or die completely without warning? Sputter = fuel pump, No warning = distributer cap?
PosseJohn,
No, it hasn't ever died or just stopped. When I press the accelerator to take off, it is like I'm doing next to nothing. It doesn't pick up, then all of the sudden, it starts to get it. It has pretty much only done this when it rains, but I found out that it does it when I hid standing water in the road. I thought it was the plug wires/distributor cap getting moisture in them. It was the factory set, but I replaced them and it is still doing it.
Check the control module it controls the spark sent to the distributor, mine cost like $20 and takes about five minutes to fix. Also check the wires going between the control module and the distributor these were fried on mine causing the module to go bad. The same thing happened on my truck the moisture can destroy the module or hurt the wires. When I would try to accelerate I would hit the gas and it just seemed like nothing was happening then with the accelerator pressed it would lite back up and take off. Fix it or it will get so bad you can't go anywhere.
Do pull the codes and see if you get anthing....I would go with the key off first and then do the key on running test....along with a "wiggle" test...
if it happens the code will come up...
I would put my vote on the ignition module....
cheap way to find out....
DO make sure the spark plug cables aren't melting and cross firing on the EGR stovepipe...(made mine sputter intermittently) It happened again when the dual wire coil harness became disconnected due to heat soaked wires....installed new wires and BAM! done
Take all connections and apply dielectric grease and resnug...this will keep moisture out and stop oxiddation of the metal prongs.
cheers
PS...make sure ECU plug is on tight....and check all grounds.
