I have a 93 F150 2wd which seems to have an oil pressure problem. It runs fine for awhile then the pressure drops off. If the engine is run at higher rpm's (ie...drive, not overdrive) It picks up again. Any thoughts or comments? Oh yeah...2 diff pumps were tried. This did not start until the original pump was pulled out with around 160,000 miles. Seems strange to me!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Are your saying the original pump was replaced because of low oil psi? IF so looks like you possibly have worn main bearings pretty common for high mile fords.
My father in law went in with for a new oil pan, and figured w/ 160k on it, might as well replace the oil pump too. Can't say i blame him. It did not have a problem w/ pressure until after that.
Well I would say that is weird. I would say pan to pickup clearance or the pickup itself might not be attached properly to the pump but I would think the psi would be off all the time. Symptoms of worn bearings common on older ford motors runs something like good oil psi when cold as it warms up when driving the psi drops when you idle it drops real low but picks up as you accelerate but to a low psi level. That is why my initial reaction was bearings but seems you either have a bad pump or weird timing as far as when the symptoms popped up. Good luck with it maybe someone will jump in and give you a better direction
Maybe it was doing it before and he just did not realize it. I am planning on a full rebuild anyway. 160k on it but the body is solid. Maybe I can pick up an engine at an auto recyclers.
I had my friend look at it today. We were fine until it warmed up. Then if we kept RPM's up it had fine pressure. He looked at the oil before we went anywhere and thought it to be too thin. Is it possible that this could be the problem? The manual specs 5w-30. On a high mileage engine, suppose this may be too thin? Also where is the sender located and could it be a bad sender? When the pressure drops to redline it seems to run fine. Would it not get real hot if it has no oil pressure? I appreciate your help.
If 5w-30 is what your using try a straight 30 or 40wt and see what happens. The 302 in my truck is a high mileage engine and even 10w-30 drops my oil pressure a little too much. I switched to straight 40wt and its tolerable now.
Would you have interest in installing a mechanical guage on your engine, they aren't expensive at all? It is easy to do and would provide a more accurate reading as to how bad the psi really is. As mentioned the weight of the oil will make a difference. Hook a gauge up and post the actual psi numbers cold idle, cruising, warm idle. Then we can give you a better idea of just how bad the situation is. The sender is located to the left of the oil filter. Good luck
