Sounds to me like it's time for a tune up.
When was the last time you put in new spark plugs? Maybe wires are looking shabby too? Cap and rotor probably have corrosion on the points where the spark crosses over - you can either clean them or buy new. While you're at it, throw in a new air filter too!

there is a solenoid that controls cold idle. its on the throttle body, looks like a long cylinder sticking out. it works to let more or less air in the throttle body to speed up or slow down your idle. its called an IAC or idle air control valve. its probably bad.
