Front driveshaft

Hey all. Putting my front driveshaft back together. Got the first u joint with the H collar attached, but I am having a hell of a time getting the cv centering ball on and the other u joint. I've ruined one brand new centering ball by breaking 4 or 5 of the needle bearings. Got another one today, and I am no closer to figuring out how to assemble it, and don't want to ruin this one too. Anyone have any tips on getting these to go together? Thank you.

I take it you have a double cardan joint?

We don't have one on our front, but here are some pictures of the rear.

The centering yoke is what accepts the output yoke on the transfer case.

Hope these/this helps.

The missing bearing cap goes to the U-joint in the centering yoke. The hole with the bearings in it on the rear of the yoke accepts the nipple on the drive shaft (left in the picture). The output yoke of the transfer case bolts to the open side (right in picture)

Obviously the U-joint bearings in the centering yoke gave up the ghost. This is the best picture I have as of now.

The white cap keeps a spring inside the cavity during shipping. The spring goes in the nipple of the drive shaft and then the nipple goes in where the white cap is.

Post up some pics of your own to help us.

I am up to the point of putting centering ball on the nipple of the driveshaft, and yes, double cardan. I cannot get the centering ball to push on nipple far enough to allow installing of u joint and caps. I tried tapping it on, and that's when I discovered how brittle the needle bearings are. It's like it won't push on far enough to get the other u joint on without pulling cv joint back off of the nipple and messing up needle bearings. I have watched 4 or 5 videos several times, but it has not helped.

There are others as you probably know by now ... but I thought this was pretty well made, slow too. I've personally never done a double cardan joint, but this looks easy here?

Maybe there is something (broken old spring or crud) in the nipple, keeping the new spring from seating in all the way.

Probe it with a pick or tweezers.

Done

Took it to a local drivetrain shop. They had it done under an hour and $25.00. Thank you for all of the replies.
