my steering column guts are broken and i need to put the shifter back on the tree from the floor (some idiot didnt look into the neutral safety switch problems this would cause ). i am planning to replace it and was wondering if anyone can tell me what needs to come off to remove it. Also if anyone can tell me about how much one from a junkyard would be, i would appreciate it.
Well if the shifter is on the floor and its an aftermarket b&m or hurst shifter they should have neutral saftey and backup light switches in them they just need to be hooked up.
on my 1976 e150 the backup switch is mounted at the bottom
of the shifter column with a band clamp. I adjusted it to be activated when pushing up to 2nd gear location. this way a little vibration will turn it off. If you drive a stick don't hit the starter with out the clutch disengaged.my van was built before the lawyers and the common sense challanged people started building trucks
back to your ? remove steering wheel, disconnect elect. conn. at under side of dash, remove connector from wires or cut the wires and buy a new turn signal switch. remove turn sw. and harness.
disconn. steering shaft at the flex union in eng. comp.
dissconn, column from under dash and unbolt at firewall.
check for back up switch wires or in the strange possibility
there may be a neutral saftey switch.
wiggle giggle jerk and cuss a little to remove the column assembly from the truck. now you can disassemble the column and replace the tube with a NEW SHIFT TUBE. reverse all this
to be able to drive your truck. best bet is to by a better quality
floor shifter
