My 1985 6.9 is getting worn out and it’s about time to need a rebuild. I’m debating a swap for a 7.3ps, 460 or maybe make people mad and get a 12 valve. Ideally I’d like to keep the idi because it’s so simple and I know how to work on it, but I don’t have the means to rebuild it on my own at the moment. On average, how much would it cost to bring it to a diesel shop and have them rebuild it start to finish?
Having a shop rebuild our engine will be costly. Also most "Diesel" shops do not
want to work on these older engines. The newest of these engines is 28 years old,
the mechanics...oops, "Technicians" that were around when these were new are
retired an the newer tech are not trained in these platforms.
Majority of the shops don`t have a clue how to set the timing on one.

@tjc transport
personally i do not trust any "rebuilder".
a lot of horror stories out there of "remanufactured" engines with 3/4 of the parts used.
a lot of places only replace what is broken and call it rebuilt.
You mentioned about swapping another engine type, that would also be costly if you do
not have the means or place to do it.
R&D IDI Performance rebuild is around $7 - $10K and up from there depending what goodies
you want or need.
How wore out is yours?
Grunt, my 86 has 323K and runs pretty good for being naturally exasperated.
Mine is also naturally aspirated. It still runs fine but smokes quite a bit and has about 300k on it, with little more than a water pump and head gaskets replaced in the last 30 years.
An engine swap is feasible in my situation, but I don’t really have a shop or garage to completely take apart and reassemble an engine. My grandpa has a 400 and 4 speed out of a 79’ f350. I imagine that swap would be pretty straightforward.
the 400 4 speed will drop in with engine mounts and trans mount change, and some wiring. but it will be a gas hog.
a running 7.3 can be had here in new jersey for between $500 and $1000 depending on mileage. sometimes i can find them as low as $250.
as far as having someone swap engine, it will probably cost more than the truck is worth as parts changers these days charge around $110 per hour.
i would look for a used running 7.3 and drop that in.
I pulled a 7.3 out of a 89 F-250 form PNP that had 195K. It was a driver till
it hit a tree and tore up the left side and cab pretty bad.
But never touched the engine.
I pulled it after Saws Alling the front end off, 25% off and out the door was
something like $341. w/o the starter, Alt, AC compressor and Power steering
Pump, and Air Cleaner assy.
It has great Compression by turning the Crank Pully Nut.
Hello yall, I just recently bought a 85 6.9 with only around 87k miles. It was running and driving till I was driving and it just cut off, everywhere said it was the shut off so that’s where I started but with no luck(bad luck if any). After replacing it it burnt out the wire from the connector to the fuse link. And once I bipassed the connector and fuse link all together it burnt through the entire harness. as well as it now seems to have a kur-plunk notice when I try and turn it over from the solenoid
It seems like the guy who had it before me disconnected a couple hoses and connectors for the wiring harness in the drivers wheel well. I was just wondering if anyone’s got any idea of what’s going on with it not starting or any pictures of where all the hoses and such go from the firewall
