Vehicle is a 1973 Ford van E250 in which the transmission was overhauled including the torque converter, and since then has a vibration.
Vibration is felt thru steering wheel on startup, and up to 30 mph, then decreases from that point on.
Shop says it is extremely rare for this vehicle to have a problem with the torque converter, they are willing to drop transmission, replace converter at no charge if this solves the problem, however if it doesn't, I bear all labor costs.
Two questions, can anyone think of any other cause for this problem ?- it did not exist for the 8 years I previously owned this vehicle.
Second question are torque converters specific to the vehicle they came in? this one was sent out by the transmission shop for overhaul, would it make a difference if an identical one was installed in its place.
Any help appreciated.

is the vibration present when your not drining? if so sounds like an engine or torque converter vibration. 302's have an external balancing. i think its 28 ounces or somethin like that. pending on how buggered up the flex plate bolt holes are its slightly possible to put the flex plate on in the rwong "clock" position. but holes have to be pretty buggered. if it only happens while driving the drive shaft could be 180 deg out of rotation. that or bad u joints.
you better let them take it apart there is no way you should have any vibration in the stearing on start up .. ujoints dont vibrate till your moving maybe the put the wrong flexplate back in or didnt tighten it right ....any vibration expecialy at 1000rpm l will distroy the front pump in a hurry ...
