Not to mention clearances. In Pennsylvania a high school or youth coach, even a volunteer, have to obtain 5 clearances including criminal record check, FBI fingerprint, child abuse record, etc. Even referees, who would never be alone with minors, have to have those clearances!

This all came about after the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State. If these requirements were in place back then, Sandusky would have gotten his clearances because he did not have a record. I'm not saying these things aren't needed but it is a lot of work, time and money to work with kids for no or little pay.

About operating a forklift, is there a minimum age requirement today? And how much training is needed?

Is there a minimum age requirement for driving a delivery truck today? How about a truck as large as an F700? Do you need a CDL for that today?

It was fun back in those days. But we were more responsible then. We had common sense. I think.... Growing up on a farm gave us practice driving trucks and tractors and teaching us how to work.

I don't want to hijack this thread but at least these are vintage pics.

These pictures appeared in the local weekly Shopping News. My Mom cut them out for me. These were taken after I quit working here and went to work with my brother doing concrete work.

The bumpside flatbed. I am not sure if it was an F-600 or F-700. Does the wheel tell us?

This was the newest truck Gerhart Bros. had, a 73 F-700

This is an old International flatbed with the roller on the back. You can see old Charlie Miller putting a steel band around the load. I think you can see the pipe under the lumber.

One more thing. We didn't get paid much but we worked 7-5 M-F and 7-3 on Sat. So with overtime we got decent pay. And we got paid cash. Every Friday we would go into the office and get handed a small envelope with our pay with a tape from the office adding machine detailing number of regular hours and number of OT hours.

I didn't grow up on a farm and didn't have any experience operating machinery. As a result, I had a little steeper learning curve than farm boys like Abe. I know I dropped at least one pallet of toilets, but don't remember anyone saying anything about it. I guess it was just chalked up to what happens with a new guy learning how to do a job. As a teacher and coach, I learned the importance of setting high expectations. If you expect a young kid should be able to drive a forklift or deliver a load of lumber, the kid will most often rise to the occasion and do what it takes to meet the challenge. Part of what's wrong with education today is that not enough is expected. In youth sports today, however, it is just the opposite. Expectations are very high and so are the results.

Honestly abe, unless your daddy owns the company, or is a close trusted family friend,

I think if a 15-16 year old kid were to walk up to any work yard and ask if they could start working with forklifts and front loaders and maybe driving the trucks just around the yard, they'd laugh you out of the office and around the block...(while asking for the correct permission slips, documents, parental signatures
