Does anyone else out there have problems when they fill-up their gas tank? When I fill up, the auto shut-off in the pump keeps kicking in. I always have to readjust the angle of the nozzle when I fill up. Then, when I can fill up, I dont think I am putting in all 30 gallons of gas. Any ideas or things that I am doing wrong? Thanks.
That is a problem with the Expys. Although I don't seem to have much trouble at the beginning of a fill up the shut off kicks in when I have about 25-28 gallons in.
From what I have read on the board here this is due to the breather hole for the fill tube not having a big enough hole. Thus not letting the fuel flow into the tank when you get near full. What I do is stand there looking like an idiot for a few more minutes slowly pinching more gas in.
I have found if you don't open the pump full bore it seems to work a little better.....but takes longer. And with winter coming....that sucks.
Thanks for the info. I too look like an idiot when I have to pinch in a couple of more gallons of gas. I wonder if there is a cheap fix to this problem or if we are destined to continue to look like fools getting the actual amount of gas that is supposed to fit in the tank.
I see you are from central OH, what part. I live in Hilliard. Thanks again.
Yeah, i agree. the expy. is a darn good looking vehicle. I know this is weird, but sometimes I catch myslef just looking at my expy and smiling. It is really nice looking.
Hell no that isn't weird.....I watch it drive off with the wife all the time. Ours is the Black with the tan.....awesome look (when it's clean I must add)

Great minds think alike. I too have a Black with Tan EB expy. It is a pain to keep clean like you said.
And along these lines I have to thank Ford for adding the little overfill area that lets the fuel drop to the ground and not get all over your hands n such.
Only happened one time but that's what I get for watching the money count up rather than watching the fuel go in
FYI, the '97 4x4 came with 30 gallon tanks, and a good thing too, if you are pullilng a large trailer against a strong head wind in AZ, UT, or Nevada late at night. You can use 28 or 29 gallons before you find an open gas station. I wish it were 40 gallons, but there is no room underneath, so a 5 gal. jerry can lives on the trailer tongue.
On my 2000, I had the same problem when putting gas in. I just didn't insert the nozzle all the way, and also, not put the nozzle on full on mode. Once I got the hang of it....it worked pretty well. And yes....my 2000 had a 30 gal tank. I think the 03's are only 28 gal.
I've traded a few emails with Transfer Flow seeking a larger tank. Not made now, byt they said if they get enough inquiries and can sense a market, they'd develop one.
If you don't know these guys- they are probably one of the best aftermarket tank makers in the US:
