Trailer plug problems

1996 Ford F-150, Eddie Bauer short box, has a trailer 4 prong plug under the bumper. When I plug a trailer in, everything works, but it blows the fuse for my pickup backup lights. I tested the 4 prong plug with the backup lights activated, all three prongs for left, right, taillight, all lit up the tester light. No wonder it blows the fuse when connected. Any ideas why? The four prong adapter is part of this five inch long adapter plugged in between two gray plugs. Did the previous owner use the wrong adapter, or is there some other issue? Once it blows the fuse, the trailer lights all work. But no pickup backup lights. Until I change the fuse. I considered cutting the black/ pink wire from both ends of the adapter and splicing a wire between them, so the backup lights wire is completely removed from the connection.

The backup lamp wiring should not be wired to a 4 pin plug.
