Why exactly do I need to swap out put shafts? 2x4 to 4x4 conversion

Well, I grabbed the output shaft from the tranny that the T-case came from becuase i was told too. But I noticed that the shaft only rode about an inch inside the input shaft. But you can bottom it out past the splines almost up to the govenor mounting plate. From what I read, the length difference is about 1/2 ", but there has to be more of difference if theres that much room in the input shaft. Is there?

Try a search in this forum. I know I saw several posts regarding this.

I seem to recall someone saying that the output shaft the first thing installed in the tranny, and required a complete disassembly to change. But I could be wrong.
