EEC-4 Upgrade??

Hey Y'all,

My ol Blue is getting close to rebuild time & I was thinking of upgrading the old EEC-4 to something more "mustang-ish" so I can do some wanted upgrades like cam & exhaust and those things. I would like to keep the original motor & possibly intake, if I need to change out the intakes (upper & lower) then so be it, as long as it matches to the more tune-able system.

She is an 85 302 Windsor w/EFI stock ECU (E5TF-12A650-S2B). She has been super reliable over the years, and I would rather rebuild than buy new. I am planning on doing a re-wire kit also because I have made repairs over the years & all, plus she's due for some serious TLC.

Has anyone here ever done what I am dreaming/planning about.

Thanks,
85_Blue

There’s a lot of info out there on MAF swaps. Sounds like that’s the platform you’ll need.

My understanding is there is very limited upgrade capability to the speed density EEC-IV platform.

I don't think any version of the EECIV was user friendly or tunable without a lot of expense. And what you did get was very limited.

If I had the money, this is what I would use. https://www.holley.com/products/fuel...xoChiYQAvD_BwE

There are several tuning systems available now for these trucks, the Moates Quarterhorse and TweecerRT are plug in modules that replace the built-in non erasable memory with a reprogrammable flash bank and with accompanying software on a laptop you get full access to tune the various parameters inside the EEC. Check out this thread.. Speed Density Tuning (1987-1996 EEC-IV) - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com)
Stinger performance also has a replacement PCM that is full tunable, it is called the Pimpx. PiMPxshift Install and Review - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com)

I believe there are some wiring and computer pinout differences between these early(85-86) EFI trucks and the '87+, but that can be addressed relatively easily by using an '87+ PCM.

For tuning there really is no advantage in going to a MAF setup these days.. it's just added expense and work for no gain, for substantial upgrades it still needs to be tuned.
