Engine trying to start itself, no key...possessed

Hey Guys,

New to the forum. My 2000 7.3 Excursion is possessed. She hasn't been running great hear lately. I just recently replaced my cam sensor that went out on me on the highway and left me stranded. Got her home and fixed that no problem. About a week later she started acting up. It was like she had a miss or something going on. It was worse at startup but still did it when warmed up. I youtubed some things that I was going to check on her the other day, went out to start her and she was completely dead. Batteries almost completely drained. I when I put a jumper box on one of the batteries, the charging of my glow plugs sounded and other clicking and things. Noises going off all over which I figured to be common. However, I got both batteries charged and hooked up. I started her right up and she seemed to be running well until I hear this pop in the engine area. About a minute I hear it again. Then it sounds like my air condition is trying to come on. I shut her off. I let her set for a minute or so and she attempted to start herself for just a second and stop. About 2 minutes later I am down at my house and she goes off trying to start herself and this time won't stop. I had to take off the battery leads to get her to stop.

I have never had this happen before. Is my PCM fried? I see no smoke, no smell of melting, nothing. I am at a total loss.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

You need to start tracing the wiring for the starter solenoid. Somewhere between your ignition switch and starter is a short to voltage.

Do excursions have a GEM? And do they have the starter solenoid on the fender, like the pickups do? If so, you can pull the small wire off that solenoid and see if it stops.

I continued reading an looking up scenarios and everything points to the starter solenoid as you guys mentioned as the first culprit. I will go from there.

Relating to your original CPS problem, if you didn't get a Motorcraft sensor, chances are good that your new one will act up when you have the intermittent windshield wipers on.

So, you might not get this lucky but, I can tell you from working on lawn mowers that all have starter solenoids, I have seen multiple times where the starter solenoids are old but still functional and are sticking making the starter stay on. If you unplug the wire on the relay coming from the ignition circuit that actually tells the relay to click over, and it still does it, I would replace the relay. Like I said you might not get this lucky but it sure would be nice! I've seen it numerous times on lawn mowers, we had to take the batteries off of them to get them to stop turning over too! Good luck!
