i am seriously considering a 351 to 460 swap on my 79 bronco and i just wanted to ask if a 460 would fit with no problem? i know the 460 will bolt to the bell housing but i was concerned that the engine will not bolt it because the 351 is 26in. wide and the 460 is 27in. wide. what would i have to do to make it fit. also, would i need to put in a different battery to crank over the 460?
i know what engine i have, it is a 1977 351m. and no. the only big blocks ford ever made were the 429/460 385 series big blocks. granted the 351m has a taller deck height and weight than a cleveland and windsor, it is not considered a big block.
i was just wondering if it is absolutely necessary to purchase a L&L kit to install a 460? the difference in width between the 351 and 460 is only 1in., i just wanted to know if it is possible for me to make it fit in my bronco?
I did a similar swap into a 77 f-250 Should be quite similar-I used the motor mounts out of a 72 429 t- bird and flipped them side to side had to open up two holes in mounts but they fit ok.
Exhaust came from a lincoln-keep in mind this occurred years before aftermarket parts were available
Just completed swapping a 302 for a 460 in my bronco. Not as hard as it seems, new motor mounts ($120), bell pack ($350), and alittle wiring. Lots of room with the PROPER MOTOR MOUNTS!
I put a 429 in my '79 and only used the motor mounts from L&L. I used an oil pan and accessory brackets from a van with a 460. The vans have a rear sump so it clears the front axle. I used stock 429 exh manifolds and custom bent my own exhaust. You need to oder a new converter (there are 2 sizes and the 351M is not the right one). I put a Sat night special in mine from Jegs. It fits great. Lower radiator hose has to be modified, but as i recall, all else was easy. It hauls butt like the 351 could only dream about!!! Plan on a trans rebuilt...I smoked mine with in a month after changing engines. Its hard to drive nice with a 429.

did you have to make any mods to your cooling system or did you use the stock setup. also did the swap change the handling much? if so how?
i'm thinking of swapping out my tired 400 for a 460 and worndering about the pros / cons of such a decision.

Depends on the summer temperatures where you live. In CA, ID and WA I had no problems with the stock radiator. Nevada, with 120°, is a different story. I now run a BeCool aluminum crossflow radiator. No handling problems in 17 years, there isn't that much weight difference. 400 - 575lbs, 460 - 720lbs.

hmmm...sounds good, i suppose with aluminum intake replacing the stocker and aluminum rad you could offset the weight diff a bit anyway. not to mention headers over iron manifolds.
we're lucky if we ever see 90 deg in the summer up here and my rad is fairly new.
i like the sound of the swap. i saw a place on the net that offered a kit that included mounts, headers, oil pan, brackets and a bunch of other stuff, kind of pricey though. maybe just the mounts and headers then scrounge up the other parts from donor rigs (like the pan out of a 460 van i saw in an earlier post).
aftermarket parts are so much easier to find for a 460 also. kicd of like the sound of a 429
so many possibilities...

If you are building up the 460 before you install it you may consider stroking it to 501, 557, or 600 by using different crank and rods? Of course you might shredd your diffs to hell and back!
