I just came upon a CL post for a cab over transmission for 50 bucks. They dont know what it is out of, just that its 2.5 ton. Only one picture.
I cant determine if it's one of ours! Anybody recognize if this is from a Ford cab over?
I've got two COs, a 1972 c800 and a 1978 c900. If it is a fit for either of mine, at 50 bucks! I'm thinking to grab it for parts or a spare.
I'd just get under mine to look, but everything is still buried under snow :^(
3 picture down here shows a top cover that might be the same as yours. Hard to tell what model. The NP435 was installed in the C series with the top cover that accepted the C series linkage. There were other manuals as well.
Thanks for helping identify the transmission.
I was able to get some pics off mine after all despite the snow. I've got two different sets of numbers on mine. On the top shifter cover there is C-97381. And on the drivers side lower case there's C 15- 1 and a D.2.70.
Do any of those numbers say anything about mine that is useful? I ask because perhaps when I go look at the one for sale maybe there's some similar numbers, or at least numbers in a similar format such that I can know how the one for sale differs from mine.
On the side of the trans case there should be a tag with the model numbers on it
The $50 trans is from a C model Ford but is larger than the one in your photo
The C-600 used the NP435 and some of the smaller Clark transmissions like the 285
The larger C models used bigger transmission, Spicer 5000 or 6000 series as well as the larger Clark models
The 68 C-800 I owned had a 534 gas with spicer 5252 5 spd trans
The first pic is the one I'm thinking to buy, the following pics are my transmission. Here is a picture of mine with the NP logo. Can you glean any info out of those numbers?
My transmission (this photo) is a 4 speed in a 1971 C600
Why didn't you post a photo of the transmissions in you 72 C-800 or 78 C-900 for us to compare it to the heavy duty transmission your looking to purchase
A 800 or 900 series would never have be equipped with the lighter duty NP435 trans that was used in a 600 series
The raised casting numbers are no help when identifying a transmission other than what brand it is, there should be a metal tag on the left or right side of the trans with the model code needed to identify it
Trying to compare a medium duty trans to a heavy duty trans is like comparing a 330FT to a 534, they are both engines use in Ford trucks
Sorry, my typo mistake. I see now in my first post I said C800, when I meant C600, like I said in the later posts. That's why my pictures of my transmission are the smaller one.
I've looked all over both my transmission and the one I'm thinking about grabbing and neither of them have a tag. Not anywhere. That's why I took a picture of the casting number by the NP logo...hoping that that would shed some light.
I went to the guy's place yesterday and looked it over. The mounting bolt holes are the same dimensions, as is the E brake hub. The shifting tower is basically the same, as is the shifting linkages.
What is the likelihood that this transmission in question would swap for me? Are there many different variations of manual transmissions on a cab over C600? I know there are 4 speeds and 5, but, aside from that are there many variations of input shaft lengths and diameters?
I took some picture of his transmission so I could post more pics of his and mine side by side, if that would be helpful.
Well I guess since my truck is a C600 and my transmission has the NP logo that must make it a NP435, right? Or where there other 4 speeds?

Most of the mounting holes are the same for the gas transmissions, 5 spd trans are normally longer requiring drive shaft shortening, also the heavier transmissions normally have a larger driveshaft u-joint yoke with a different bolt pattern
That transmission may work in the C-900 but not the C-600 without modifications, measure everything
It's been many years since we were pulling out NP435 4 spds and replacing them with 285 Clark 5 spds, if memory is correct everything bolted up but the drive shaft due the the 285 being a inch or two longer
Per the MPC, the NP435 shows up as well as the T18. But I have not seen a decode with a T18 in a medium truck, nor is there any record of Numberdummy mentioning a T18 in this forum.
Many flavors of 5 speed show up, but if it has NP on it with 4 gears, it's an NP435.
No idea about the cast in numbers. One looks like a date code.
Thanks guys, that's all helpful info. And, what the hell, for fifty bucks I'm gonna buy that transmission and stick it away. Hopefully, I'll never need it, but I plan on keeping my C600 and 900 for a long time, so you never know.
