10 speed trans with 6.7 diesel
#16
George and company,
I've had not issues with my 2020 F-350 SRW 7.3 gasser 10 speed.
There was a story of loose bolts or something left out in the gasser trannies.
But there is more to the story.
The 6.7 oil burner has one more planetary gear in the cage than the gasser has to mitigate the massive torque of the diesel.
Why they cheaped out for the gasser is a mystery, unless you consider the bean counter mentality of Ford execs.

I’ll preface my response by stating that I have a 7.3 gasser, not a diesel, and that I also drive it like the grandpa that I am, but I have to wonder if a lot of the criticism I read about with the ten speed has a lot to do with the way it’s being driven. I’ve never put my foot in it, I’m beyond that point in my life, and I try to plan stops well in advance. Whether empty, or pulling our four horse living quarters trailer, this transmission couldn’t be any smoother, in my opinion. I rarely feel it shifting up or down, only hearing and seeing the changes in engine RPM. Your mileage and experience may vary.
Agreed, most complaints is because of how different it is to a 6 speed. The HD 10 speed is based off the 10 speed in the F150, not the same transmission, just based off it. I have 55K on my 2018 F150 and not a single complaint. It does have quirky shifting depending on how cold it is, or how much go pedal is given, and does hunt a bit in some situations, but it has 10 speeds!!! What I find most appealing is that it negates the need for lower gear ratios due to its first being so low that the wheel outputs are actually lower than earlier transmissions with lower ring gears. The 6 speed and 3.73 for example, now a 3.55 with the 10 speed is actually lower. You get the best of both worlds, low gearing for pulling from a stop and high gearing for decent economy.

I came from a 2015 to a 2022. I LOVE this new transmission. Especially living in the mountains, it works very well. It always knows what gear to be in. My old truck would wait too long to downshift, bog out, then come roaring back. It could never keep a constant cruise speed in the hills. It's nice having more options between gears for towing up and down long grades.
