That would depend on the understanding you had on pollution. If you think that a ton of nice black smoke pouring out of the exhaust is not pollution, diesels do not pollute.
Diesels actually pollute the air less than gas engines. The black soot you see pouring from the stack of an 18-wheeler is mostly particulate matter that falls to the ground. Very little of that smoke actually pollutes the atmosphere. The environmental impact of all that soot landing on the topsoil is a matter that the EPA has never really addressed, however.
Actually, its the particulate emissions that have kept diesels out of lighter trucks. They have tried exhaust "filters" but it is hard to make one that does not need servicing before 100k miles.
If they would only make it easy to replace the filter, it would be no big deal to replace it before 100k. Like a cartridge filter that goes inline with the exhaust pipe.
Diesels can pollute as much as gas engines, they just release different exhaust matter. Most of the black smoke you guys are talking about is sulfur, because the diesels we have in this country is low grade high sulfur diesel. If we switched to high grade diesel fuel, we wouldn't have as many pollution problems.

Yep, NOx is an issue. Particulates are another. It's not the big particles that fall to the ground that the regulators are concerned about, it's the small ones that stay airborne long enough to get into the lungs - I believe the size is less than 10 microns.
