Check/rebuild suspension, brakes, and steering. Catch up the maintenance, flush and change ALL fluids. Replace brake hoses (and lines if rusty). Make sure tires are 6 year old or less. Then start towing your 6000 pounds.
That is my plan. Thanks. I just got this truck about three months ago so as soon as we get away from this sub zero weather we are having here I will get to doing my own inspection and fluid change all around. Long story short. I lost the steering on one of the work trucks I used to drive. It had a valid inspection sticker. After that I just don't trust anyone with a safety inspection.
I am going to guess that towing a trailer that is close to max weight capicty in overdrive is not good. I am not sure. Any body have any ideas on that?
I moved your overdrive question here. I don't know which transmission you have, but the later ones are OK in overdrive UNLESS you can't hold OD and are "hunting". I that case, take it out of OD or any other gear it won't hold and run it at a safe RPM in the next lower gear.
