I m getting a wonk wonk wonk noise when I drive 40 mph or more, F250 2wd, 2000 7.3 auto tranny. Wheel revolution speed is not the same as the noise. So that is puzzling. Tires are round, I ran the truck in the air, 60 mph on the speedo, looking and listening. Noise is not at the wheels, it's loudest in the bed. Wheels going 60mph with my wife in the seat I only hear her nag and the differential noise is coming right up thru the bed of the pickup. The wheel bearings don't have play. I found a small leak at seal at the 4R100 tailshaft, but no play. U-joints on this truck and carrier bearing are new just a few months ago, and still good. I am pretty strong guy but can not move the pinion at all so no play there
I have hear lots of whining and clunking from these sterling differenials before in other pickups, but this is a new noise for me. Spider gears dont turn when I go in a straight line. Whole carrier should be turning, right? Maybe spider gear broke tooth.
Could I have bent axles shaft? Are sterling axle shafts for F350 srw the same as F250?
Is it a 2 piece driveshaft? Many overlook a worn carrier bearing. How's the differential oil look? If you can't find anything wrong externally, it would be just a guess without pulling the diff cover, wheels, etc to inspect for damaged parts.

I have inspect the oil and she is low and rather dark. I am all my shame only me for this, but there is no trace of oil leak out anywhere! One more quart maybe 10 pumps on the handle went in and the noise is lower but still there. Some metal dust on the magnetic plug but always there is that. Now I will run for a week then put new oil.
