Loves Truck Stop

Good morning. I’m out of town on vacation so I’m trying to be very careful with where I get fuel. I’m going to be passing a loves truck stop tomorrow. If I get fuel there, does anybody know if I’d be pulling from the same tanks the big rigs pull from?

If the auto diesel is in the gas fuel island , most likely not. Typically auto diesel in ground tank is grouped together with gas in ground tanks. I have occasionally seen auto diesel right beside the larger diesel pumps at same fuel island, so look for those. From what I have seen at Love's its really hit and miss.

I fuel up at Love's and TA on trips and have never had an issue. Their diesel turns over quickly, so I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you have a fleet card, you'll either have to go inside to pay if you use the semi pumps, or use the diesel pumps out front with the cars. I have a TSD card, so I can pay at the semi pumps. The TSD card also gives you a discount, TA gives a higher discount usually.

If you are asking if there is any difference in quality or blend of diesel, no, it's all the same. Many of these truck stops have RV only lanes, with gas and diesel, the big rig drivers had rather you use those.

If your planning on stopping at Loves often, I would suggest getting a TSD card and go through the big rig lanes. It doesn’t cost any money for the card, however you do have to provide your ssn and your bank account number, which some don’t like. I’ve never read anything bad happening with this company though, so I chose to get one. Basically you pay at the pump with the card, and later that day, or on Monday if it’s the weekend, they total the cost with your discount and draft that amount from your bank account (which is why the need your bank account number). They need your ssn in case you don’t have money in your account so they can make other efforts to recover their money. I topped off twice this past weekend at 2 different Loves station and it saved me $9 on 30 gallons of fuel. So it’s not a huge savings, but a savings none the less, and I like that I can use the same fresh fuel that is being moved a lot rather than sitting a lot.

There is no advantage to using the big truck pumps and as mentioned, the practice isn't really supported by the guys who need to use those pumps to make their living. Sometimes fuel will all come from the same holding tank, sometimes not, there is no rule about this, just depends on the design of the facility. If you think buying from the big boy pumps will give you fewer problems, you haven't talked to a trucker lately. The new trucks have fairly regular emissions system problems which may or may not be fuel related but you are not avoiding issues by using a different pump.

I can guarantee you that the underground storage tanks are common for all diesel pumps at every truck stop, truck islands and car islands.
Why would they go to the extra expense to have multiple storage tanks for different pump islands for the same product???
And, when you see the tanker trucks delivering their load of fuel into the storage tanks, they are always dropping into the same spot, not one for trucks and the other for small vehicles.
Also, if you are going to be travelling past a Love's, then you will also be travelling past a Flying J or T/A or any number of other big time truck stops, all use the same kind of diesel fuel.

The one thing about Loves around these parts (Tulsa to western AR to Kansas City) you will pay a 40-50 cent per gallon premium for their fuel, verified yesterday. I find a nice station close to the truck stops and fuel there. They get enough traffic, with the avoid high prices crowds, to have good fuel. I paid $3.39 for diesel, when Loves was $3.84 nearby.

I've been back and forth across this country a dozen times in the last 10 years. I've stopped at many a Love's, TA, Flying J, Maverick, Kum-N-Go, Buckees, and anything else that is convenient and open along the way. I've never once had a problem with bad fuel.

My only advice with fuel is you can often save $.50/gallon by driving a few miles away from the interstate and into the smaller towns. If you're towing a big trailer, getting in and out of them can be tricky sometimes.

Instead of “truck stops”, I prefer “farmer” stations. More than likely owned and operated by a local that will be hung by the other locals if selling bad fuel!

Never had an issue with Love’s besides the price.

I always try to get a little into a town and find a grocery store gas station or Valero. Plenty of volume and fair price.

This is incorrect. Again, it depends on the site, layout, and what the owners want done. If there is diesel out front and truck diesel out back, it very well could be different underground tanks. There is a ton of money in these places and $50k for another tank is nothing. I am involved in building service stations, so I know this from a first hand experience.

I think "service stations" is an outdated term as those don't really exist anymore.

Go to a Loves station some time. Almost all of them have service bays for the truckers. Oil changes, tires, repairs... They offer food and fuel and service, I think they probably qualify
