asuming you have the tranny. you would need to put in a steering column with the auto shifter, change the flywheel, and put in a torque converter. i think thats it but there might be more hidden somewhere
I did that swap, but I cheated. I just yanked the 5 speed, bolted in a flexplate, changed the front shaft on my driveshaft, Movedtha crossmember, and used a B&M Truck Megashifter to cover the hole in the floor. I dropped the clutch pedal to the floor and wired the neutral safety switch (comes with the shifter) to the starter control circuit. My computer never missed a beat, and she never surges , bucks or stalls when put into gear. Point of note: You need new flexplate bolts, and the flywheel bolts are too long.
I have a '94 F150, 302 with that troublesome Mazda 5 spd. and want to put in an AOD. Tired of "rowing" it around town too. My question is: Where is the speedometer cable on the 5 spd.? Are they using wheel speed sensors instead of a cable? Any tips you can pass along for this swap would be helpful - lockup or non-lockup converter? Thanks!
Jackman,
...Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts! If you have a minute check out the Guidelines, it will help you to navigate through and understand FTE. Stick around someone will be by shortly to answer your question.
We are pleased you have chosen the best source for Fords!

I know for sure on 96 F series with RWAL Brakes (rear only Anti-Lock) that they use the Wheel speed sensor for that. On 1994,I'm pretty sure they do too,but get a second opinion. I just plugged the Speedo hole on the AOD with the speedo gear housing. Just removed the gear and filled the cable hole with RTV.
Thanks for the warm welcome. Now I need to stand and testify. Yes, I was once one of the dreaded bowtie brigade, but I've seen the light, my brothers, and have crossed over to the land of the Blue Oval. Now there is Ford blue running through my veins. Can I get an Amen....
Hope you all have a great day!

Don't feel so bad. I used to be so die hard Chevy, that I even hated other GM brands! But, fortunately, good sense took over, (that and I got jilted by GM on my last truck) and I bought a Ford. My uncle laughed when I bought it. He said "So, you finally decided to listen to your uncle Joe, huh?" He always used to tell me that he'd never buy anything but Fords and Internationals for his concrete business. When International stopped building pickups he went to all Fords. His feeling was that GM built better cars, and Ford built better trucks. He used to tell me "Drive GM cars, but drive Ford Trucks." He drove Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles, but he worked Fords and Internationals. He was right, but now that all the good cars except for the Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis/Town Car are gone, Ford Cars are the only way to go too. But I still Love my 1984 Olds 98.
Calling Mr. Argo!
I've been going back & forth between rebuilding the M5R2 or swapping in an AOD. The 5 spd. has started to make ominous continual "clicking" noises in 4th & 5th gear. I think the countershaft bearings in trans are bad. Other than that, the trans behaves quite well. 167,000 mi. though. I've found rebuild kits online for around $400, plus I'd want to freshen up the clutch (another $200). I found an AOD at local salvage yard - trans, flexplate, converter, and long driveshaft to cut down if needed. (my truck is a 2WD shortbed) Does the front driveshaft youke interchange between the 5 spd & the AOD? Does the AOD trans mount bolt up to the crossmember? Did you have to drill new crossmember mounting holes when you moved it?
You think an AOD out of a car (Lincoln, T-Bird, LTD, ect) would work? I know the truck AOD has a little wider overdrive band, but I won't be towing anything so this is not a problem.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Jackman
Anyone out there ever lower a '94 F150? Interested in dropping mine 3" in front, 5" in back. Not looking to SLAM it on the ground, it just sits too high for a 2WD.

Yes, it does.

Not really, just a bit of filing to elongate them about a half an inch.

My trans was from a Colony Park wagon, so I don't know if it was built with the wider bands or not. I am not an automatic expert, so if I were you I'd get a tranny shop's opinion on that (or one of the guys here who is blessed with AOD knowledge).
Ironically, I miss having a stick, I love shifting. I just picked up an NP 435 over the weekend, and I can't wait to put it in. I can't complain about the AOD, though, it has been good to me. I have towed with it alot too, up to 6,500 lbs. Invest in a super duty tranny cooler to keep it cool and I recommend Synthetic ATF. FYI, get a dipstick from a van. I love the extra length, it makes checking fluid alot easier. The stock tube get's lost behind the number 6 intake runner. Good luck with your swap!

BLASPHEMER!! Trucks only sit too low, never too high!! LOL I lifted my truck too look like a 4x4. It probably won't look too bad, actually, might even sit like a Lightning.
Thanks again for the info, Argo - I might miss the stick a little, heck - I was taught to drive a stick. Bet most of the kids these days can't say that. Had a fairly wicked '69 big block Chevelle in high school, 396 with the Muncie M-22 "rock crusher" 4 spd. That was fun, but a cop magnet.
Just tried an el-cheapo exhaust trick - my truck is a 302, but factory muffler is a piece that looks like it belongs on a tractor! 32" long, and about 10" dia. Well, I love the sound of a V8, but couldn't even HEAR mine, and didn't want to spend big bucks on a new CAT-back system. So.....I put in a "7 - Tube" system - had a local muffler shop cut me a 32" piece of "tubing", cost was "$7", and replaced the "tractor muffler" with it. Result was an exhaust tone very similar to a stock 5.0 Mustang. This is straight fron the CAT, no muffler at all. Kind of makes me wonder how bad the stock CAT is clogged up....anyway, it cost me less than twenty bucks to get a little "rumble".
OK, Mr Argo - getting all my stuff together for swap - had to replace rearend due to nasty little vehicle speed sensor in center at top of diff. lost it's little pin and sent it through gears, taking out three ring gear teeth and punching a hole in rearend cover.
Replacing entire rearend with a '96 unit, as when you turned the axle you could see the pinion gear tilt up & down, the bearings were so bad.
Bought a B&M "Quicksilver" shifter that covers manual shifter hole nicely. Think I might get lucky and not have to have driveshaft work done, the AOD is VERY close to the length of the 5 spd.
So far patient is doing fine, Dr. is a bit ragged tho....
Hey Argo - just finished up the swap - had to offset my trans mount on the crossmember by about 3" using a piece of 1/4" steel plate & some grade 8 bolts, other than having the driveshaft cut & re-balanced, I put in an external trans cooler to help out, and had to switch starters as the one from the 5 spd wouldn't work with the AOD. Used one out of a '92 T-Bird, works great. All good so far, shifts fine with the overdrive running around 600 rpm lower than OD in 5 spd. (5 spd = 2600 rpm @ 75 mph, AOD = 2000 rpm @ 75)
Just wanted to say thanks for the tips, and by the way - so far I've stomped the floorboard 3 times where the clutch pedal used to be while starting the motor, or coming to a stoplight.......lol

Yeah, I still do that once in a while. I also grab for the column shifter after I've been driving the Olds for a while, too.
