everything i read say the official interval is 150k miles. i want my trans to last like Flatbed Ed, not replace it at 160k miles.
the truck was on extreme rough duty service schedule before i got it, but do not remember what the service schedule was and can not find the service records.
i do remember that it had front wheel bearing assemblies and universals changed every 35k miles, and oil changed every 3k miles.

I believe Mark K suggests about 50K for the full fluid flush/exchange for "normal" duty. Being very old school I can't see going 150K even on good quality ATF.

Then again so many drive upwards of 300K never changing ATF so anything's possible.

It does occur to me Blackstone Labs will test AFT if you're concerned how its holding up over time. Since I do my own fluid changes it will be easy retrieving a suitable sample, not sure whether a for-hire shop would draw the sample for you though.

I have a 4R70W with just over 290K original miles and a 4R75E that was rebuilt just about 47K miles ago. As they become due for the fluid flush I'll submit samples to Blackstone, that should be interesting.

i have been using the local ford dealer for oil change the past 10 years or so because in the long run it is about the same price as doing it myself.
plus, since i can no longer use the waste oil a weed killer and insecticide around the house, they get rid of it.
they will take a sample for me if i ask them to.
i know sooner or later i will need to pull the trans as the front seal is seeping.
not bad, but enough to leave spots in the driveway. it has leaked less than a quart in 4 years.

I'd pull and submit a sample just for giggles and grins---those reports are fairly interesting.

Responsible disposal is important these days---good on ya for doing the recycling thing!

Changing more often than recommended can't really hurt anything.

Seems like it should help the transmission last longer and work better.

Remember, the maker only has to pay for the repairs while under warranty. After that you have to pay for repairs.

If the transmission did fail at some point you'd at least know that it wasn't because you left a dirty filter and broken down ATF in the transmission for far too long.

so true Jim. i have always done 30-35k trans service.
i maintained a 94 E150 extended van for a customer years ago. 302-E40d. had 295k miles on it when he sold it.
3000 oil change and 30k trans service. engine and trans were NEVER opened up.
the guy that bought it put another close to 75k miles on it when the engine went because he never did an oil change.

'Just digging through the owner's manual on my 2013 F250 6.2L AWD and find their recommended fluid change for the 6 speed trans, axles, and transfer case to be 150,000 miles :

That seems a bit high but, that's great if I can wait that long (I only have 82k miles on my truck so far).

Agree with above ^^^^^!

Here's what I have done on every vehicle (auto trans) that I have owned for 30 years....

At 20k miles, I change the filter (due to possible residual/initial wear particulates that may be floating inside) and either drain the torque converter (if so equipped with a plug) or disconnect the trans cooler line at the radiator, fill the pan with fresh fluid, my wife starts the engine and when 2-3 quarts drain into a bucket, she shuts it off, I refill the pan and repeat until the fluid is clear. I change only the fluid after that (unless I determine substances/contamination in the oil). The intervals vary depending on the type of trans, type of fluid and conditions, but in general, every 30k miles. Heat is a killer on automatic trans fluid and when we lived in the desert area, I changed the trans fluid at the end of summer every year.

If you do a search for Mark Kovalski (posters login name) he is a retired Ford Tranny engineer...lots of very good advise and he also recommends changing the fluid much sooner than the "book" says (IIRR, he does his own personal vehicles every 30k also)

50k is what I do unless I think it needs it sooner. No way would I go 150,000 ever I don’t care what Ford says.
