Fuel Cap/DEF Security Option

Not sure what to call this thread but I came up with this a few years ago and while I thought about making them and selling a few, they are too easy for someone to make so going through the patent/sales stuff is not worth the effort. I originally came up with this to prevent someone from messing with my fuel/DEF system while I was out traveling. I just took a thick piece of plexiglass and a PVC cap I bought at the local home store. While I thought about needing aluminum plate for the base, the thick plastic works just fine. Anyway, you cut one hole that just fits over the fuel inlet and another that fits over the DEF cap. This is what it starts out like:

Once you get the cap put on with a little epoxy, you sand up the edges a bit and I used a file to file down the letters on the PVC cap. After that I just put a few coats of black paint on it. Then it comes to this stage:

So, the concept is, the locking fuel cap keeps the plate in place and can't be pulled off unless you remove the fuel cap. The DEF cap is secure under the PVC cap and you can lift off the plate, take off the DEF cap, and add DEF if needed. Like I mentioned, more of an anti-vandalism thing but maybe it might make some folks stop and think before they put fuel/DEF down the wrong tube. This is what it looks like on the truck. I have been using it for two years now and it still works fine. Anyway, if someone out there is looking for a quick and inexpensive option, here it is.

Thats a nice idea. One thing I learned though, never leave the cap off the diesel fill when putting def in as it can splash and you sure don't want any of that crap getting into the fuel. Takes very little DEF in the CP4 to totally destroy it and from what I read, once DEF gets in the pump, it stays there. Thats some NASTY S***.

I can see swinging it down, putting the cap back on and then filling will work, so

For what it is worth BEM does have the locking gas cap (I have a 2020 6.7L). Their phone number is 785-562-2475. Cost of the cap is $70.00 and $10 for an extra key. Great news is the are in preproduction of a locking DEF cap and could be ready in a month. You can call and be put on the prebook list for it.

I've been waiting for two years for the DEF cap to come out from BEM for a Ford but they keep getting delayed. This fix will hold me over until a locking DEF cap is available.

I can find them only on FB. Their website isn't coming up for me. I didn't want to call them unless it's the only option.

Probably like many other companies, they are moving away from hosted sites to FB. Too bad, with more and more people giving FB the finger Like I do, they will get less business. With what they did with the truckers yesterday, would not be surprised if they lose another 100K users.

I can see why they did it, practically free internet sales, not paying for a hosted site, but they are only good if you join FB.

I'm with you. Dropped all Facebook or other social media. If it can only be purchased through FB, I don't buy it.

I bought a locking Stant cap yesterday. Part # 10510D. $20 at O'Reilleys. Fits perfect. I like that you can remove the key in either position - it allows you to leave it unlocked while on a trip and not have to fool with the keys every time you re-fuel. I'm going to work on getting the tether connected to it so it will hang on the little hook in the fuel door like the factory cap while fueling.

FYI - there is another cap that fits: Part #: 17510D. They are keyed alike so you can buy a bunch for a fleet and not have to keep track of keys.

I have a sheet of black ABS that I am going to make the security plate with DEF filler cover out of. Like was said - not bulletproof but will help to stop vandalism or theft.

It's a great idea SARDiverDan - thanks for sharing with us !!!

What’s the difference between the two Stant caps? And does the Bem cap need to be unlocked with a key every time?

You don't have to lock the BEM each time but I do. The BEM cap only turns about 1/4 turn from open to shut.

I checked with them a couple of months ago and this cap does not fit a 2022. As something change?
