Can you help my ID my motor/transmission? Some of you may have seen my build thread. Its a '49 F-5 Stakebed. Got the motor and tranny out today and was hoping some of you could provide some insight. I can see some blue paint on the block, but the bellhousing is red. One member already pointed out I had the incorrect oil pan for that truck, so maybe the block got swapped at some point? Transmission is a 4 speed from what I can gather but not sure with version. Curious if I'm going to be double clutching when it goes back together.
That's the correct engine and trans for your truck.
Some will say the 8BA was a car engine only, but it's only semantics.Truck heads were marked 8RT but the blocks are the same with a few minor changes that are insignificant for the most part.
239 CID flathead V8 is a 239 CID V8
The trans is the 4 speed spur gear trans aka crash box. No synchros, the gears are all straight cut that you should learn to double clutch when you shift.
Enjoy your truck!

Hey, thanks for the info Tim! If anyone has the correct oil pan I would be a buyer. I am going to go through it all. Any worthy upgrades to the motor/transmission worth doing while I have it out?
The engine should be fine with normal care. The only performance upgrade that realistically helps is boring for oversize pistons. Other upgrades are costly eye candy - just my 2 cents worth.
The transmission - if you can find a T98 it would give you synchronizers for easier shifting. If you're not driving it much, the T8 will outlast you and parts are available to rebuild if necessary.
The oil pan doesn't make a difference performance wise. They have a huge cleanout plate on the bottom of the sump that always leaks. You may be better off with that car pan. If you do change it, you will also need the truck pan dust seal - so you're looking for multiple pieces. They exist, but aren't plentiful. If you're doing a 100 point restoration it is important. If you just want a dependable driver what you have will work just fine.
Just a side note: at least the driver's side water pump appears to be the uncommon early 8BA truck pump with bushing (has an oil flip cap). Most 8BA pumps are sealed bearing pumps.
Just a personal opinion but the non-synchro transmission takes a little of the fun factor out of owning an old truck. Sure you can do it, we all have. I drove large truck for a living for years. Would be afraid to let a grandchild try one out though. Good theft deterrent. Try for a T-98.
