I have a 76 F100 with a rebuilt 390 and a brand new radiator. My problem is this: Just lately my temperature guage has been heating up close to the H. Also, as this does this my heater in my truck doesnt put out heat. At normal speeds the the temperature guage drops to normal again but when back to stop-and-go speeds it heats up again. What can this be??
Have you checked to see if the system is topped off with coolant? There are several things to check. A good fan shroud and a functioning fan clutch would be places to examine. It sounds like your system will cool if air is flowing through it. The stop and go driving is pointing to your fan system IMHO since not enough air is being pulled through your radiator at slow speeds.
Your water pump could be an issue to if you used the old one.
