I have a problem with my 89 F150 that is driving me nuts. Its a 300-6 4x4. Sometimes after the truck sits overnight it will not start, just cranks and cranks. I jumpered out the EEC relay and the fuel pump relay, no change, and you can smell gas so it must be a no spark situation. One time while diagnosing this I had good spark out of the coil but none at a spark plug so I replaced the cap and rotor. Still NG. Replaced spark plugs and it fired up fine but the problem came back a few days later..so I am thinking maybe I disturbed a wire or something that is flaky when it is wet outside? Are there any other sensors or relays I should check out? I havent replaced the plug wires yet but they look fine and I cant believe they would completely kill the engine. Any suggestions? I will get new wires but somehow I think it is more involved than that.
No, I havent, but wouldnt the check engine light come on if there were any stored codes? The light has not come on while driving and once the truck is started it is fine and has no drivability problems.
Went out and checked the truck, which was a no start a couple of days ago. Still no start..checked for spark out of the coil and this time didnt have any. Cleaned the connections at the coil and the coil wire, truck fired right up. If it happens again I will see if that fixes it again, maybe its just a bad connection. I think the ignition module is in the distributor for this engine but I will double check.
Jeff,
yep sounds similar, one time I was troubleshooting this I had a good hot spark out of the coil but spark at a plug looked very weak. I replaced a few of the plugs (these things are original and are soooo rusted in its a real bear to get them out) and it fired right up, so I thought the plugs were the problem..but it came back a week later. Im still not trusting it, I will post if it comes back.
I have the same problem with my 88 f250 as well. When ever the weather gets damp or cold, the truck will not start. It cranks and cranks but won't turn over. not much good since I use it to plow in the winter
I replaced the coil and rotor and still nothing. I was about to go get new plugs and wires as well, but after reading these posts, it sounds like that isn't the problem.
Does anybody know where the ignition module is on an 88 f250 5litre 6 cylinder? and how much are they?
I'm hoping that this might be the soltiuon. has replacing this module worked for anybody else yet?
