Trading Down?
I’m considering trading my 2017 F350 XLT SB 6.2l gasser with 48k miles (KBB ~$50k trade-in) for a 2012 F350 6.7l diesel, King Ranch, long bed with 80k miles listed at ~$45k. I had a 7.3l before my current truck. I liked it but felt it was underpowered (it had 275k miles and probably had turbo leaks). With my current truck when traveling from NM to AZ and AZ back to NM which we do several times a year with a 10k Lb fifth wheel it does “fine” but climbing grades, passing, even keeping up with traffic at times it feels like I’m beating the hell out of it. In those instances I get 4-6 mpg (I believe to be expected) but otherwise I love the creature comforts, transmission shifting, stability, etc. but...I’m already feeling partial to “stepping down” in terms of year and mileage to the 2012 6.7l but I wanted to get unbiased (and potentially biased) pros and cons from people on here. TIA for any input you provide.
Myself would not go back into the previous generation truck that’s 10 years old. 1 because up here in MI 10 year olds are mostly starting or well rotted from rust. But it sounds like you are in an area where hidden rust isn’t as much of a concern. Have you driven the ‘12? That’s a lot of $$ for a 10 year old truck. I would try to find a better deal on newer truck myself.
45K is WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY too much for a 10 year old truck.
If your current truck is able to do the job for now, but you want to change to the diesel, wait a while until the market calms down and you can find a worthwhile deal.
Or, find a dealer willing to deal and order a new truck.
Saw a commercial where Ford is offering incentives for new ordered vehicles.

I wouldn't. That's a ton of money for a vehicle that old, just to get into the diesel engine. I'd hold out for something '17+ at the very least. I traded in my '19 gasser for a '19 diesel, same trim, same options, similar mileage, I gave them my truck plus $4k. The sticker on the '19 diesel was $41k with about 25k on the ticker. That was during COVID when prices were stupid low for vehicles but my point is I'd hold out for a deal on something newer. It sounds like you're not hard up for a vehicle, the current one is doing fine, just trying to get something that tows a little better. This is a tough time to buy a vehicle.
Can't speak to the 6.7 vs. gasser issue because the last diesel I owned other than my Bobcat skid steer and Kubota tractor was a 1997 7.3 F Super Duty.
However I did own two of the previous generation F 250s and in my experience/opinion today's generation rides better and has quieter cabs if that means anything to you.

with how desperate dealers are for clean used trucks, id try to find a dealer with a diesel you want.
market is still insane, i'm considering downsizing my truck and wife's 4runner lol. we can probably get what we paid for them even though one has 85k miles and the other has 65k miles
towing will suck with a half ton lololol

Ok seems like the overwhelming consensus is to pass the 2012 up. I appreciate the advice and input. My thought was to take advantage of the appreciation (more like inflation) of my current truck and apply that to a lower priced truck and save some money. But I agree with not trading for a 10 yr old truck to get that. As a reference I bought my truck used at the start of covid for 33k if kbb is somewhat accurate in trade-in value I could get around 49k. A 2016-2018 F350 diesel in my area with 50-70k miles is going for around 65k. So while my trucks “value” has gone up so has the diesels (maybe by more). But as some of you mentioned I’m not in a rush at all so I’ll just keep my eye out for now. Thanks again!

#2, used prices are crazy, no point even looking at them right now.
#3, you can order a new truck for less than 65K if you look hard enough for the right dealer. My Lariat MSRP was just under 65K, got it for 61K on X-Plan.
