Remote key fob malfunction

2015 F-350. Used to be able to remote start and lock/unlock from the house out to the driveway. Now I have to be within ten feet with no obstructions. Does this with both FOBs and both have fresh batteries in them. Any ideas? Factory remote with no mods.

just guessing you used fresh batteries from the same pack?
I would try new batteries (name brand) from another pack. Worth trying a $5 fix first. Hopefully you just got a bad batch of batteries in the first pack. I’ve had this happen with batteries I bought at the DG. Best of luck

When new, one of my cars would remote start from an incredibly long distance away. Like 250 yards. Now it won't do more than 50-75 yards no matter what battery I put in it.

Try the new batteries (name brand) and see if it changes the distance. I am surprised but my new 21 truck will remote unlock from inside the house also. The wife's 2016 will not.

I've checked the batteries with a volt meter and they are all fresh.

I run across vehicle gate operators weekly with the same problem. Radio interference. How many wireless networks does your device detect? I have seen instances where the remote has to be less than 1 foot from the antenna to function. Does this only happen at your home, or everywhere? Radio frequencys between 300 to 318 mghz seem to be affected the most. Now it turns out 5g networks are negatively affecting airports.

I'll put this in both threads...

Take the truck out to a remote location away from civilization and electrical noise. If it works well there, but not at the house, then you have a radio interference issue. Could be WiFi, a leaky computer, just about anything. But likely something that's on all the time.

If you're still down to 10 ft out in nowhere, then you have a fob or truck issue. Makes you wonder if the new batteries are as good as the old ones were?

good idea/point. Easy to test too. Curious to hear OP’s results.

Did you install LED lights in the truck or around where you park it.

^^^ TRUE! There's so much EMI at my office that remote start won't work when I'm standing right next to the truck. Often have to position the fob in the "dead battery" pocket deep in the console to start the truck, and regularly get "No active key" dashboard message while driving through the parking lot. No problem anywhere else.

We live in a rural area. Have tried it in parking lots and open fields. No luck.

Yes, years ago. FOB just started doing this a few months ago. I think it's something with the truck.

There is a convenience store that I often stop at, my fob won't even unlock the doors even if just a few inches away.
There is a transmitter for a power company meter right there, I do believe that is the problem.
So I will also say there is a good chance of some type of radio interference at your house, try the fobs in different locations and see what it does.

I wonder if this has something to do with AT&T and Verizon turning on their 5G.

Well, then we're down to truck or fobs. If it were me, I'd suspect fob the batteries even though they may be relatively new and showing a good voltage on the voltmeter. There is a thing called "internal resistance" that restricts current flow even when voltage is present. That's why your engine batteries are tested "under load" -- for the cost vs hassle factor I'd replace the batteries with a name brand, exact replacement. Clean the little contacts in there while you're at it.

After that I guess the next thing I would do is try to find the trucks antenna for this thing. Make sure it's in good shape and none of it's connections have corroded or worked loose. After that I got nothing...
