I have a 92 F350 CC 4x4. All of a sudden my fuel mileage dropped significantly. I never calculated the fuel usage, I just know the gage drops fast, and I have to stop frequently. I saved a couple receipts and noticed I am not using the gas I thought I was. The other day I had less than half a tank in front, and the rear was under a quarter. When I stopped for fuel, I topped both tanks but only filled 23 gallons. It seems like I have an extra 10 gallons that does not show on my gages. Can my gages be reading wrong? Is that an electrical issue, or normal degradation? I'm curious to see if others have noticed this.
Can the sending units be wrong? Yes. I’m a little unclear if the gauge off by the same amount. If so then I’d say that the gauge might be the problem since each tank has its own sending unit.
No the gauges in these trucks are not even remotely accurate, and the variation between units is all over the map. With my old '90 the front tank would show full forever and then suddenly drop like a rock and the rear tank was almost the complete opposite. New senders probably won't entirely fix this problem... just give you different results, so my suggestion is to run one tank at a time right down until the motor starts to die before switching over, and take note of the miles driven to get an idea of the true range available. If that uncovers a real problem like you can't use more than 1/2 of a 19gal tank then it's quite possible it has the wrong fuel delivery module and fuel level sender in it.
