Torque Pro Phaser Diagnostics
I have a 2004 SCrew with 187k on the clock. I had a timing set rebuild about 25k miles ago with all OEM parts. Well hurray for Ford after two years or so both chain tensions blew out the seals, which led to chain slap, and the rest everyone knows about. I pulled off the front cover and replaced the tensioners with Melling ratcheting units that will never blow out a seal like the OEMs and replaced the chain guides. They're similar to the tensioners found on the 2V Ford V8s. I put it back together, fire it up, chains sound great, and now I'm getting a cornucopia of DTCs. Everything from 0011, 0012, cylinder misfires, 0021, 0345, and maybe some more. They come and go depending on me tinkering. Then I came across how to monitor the phasers via Torque, which is a super app for anyone who doesn't have it. Using Torque it appears that my bank 1 phaser is always commanding a 35 degree advancement regardless if it is cold, hot, or upside down. However, if I am reading this correctly, it looks like the VCT system isn't doing anything to make it move. The photos below are just a cold start up and idle. Torque looked the same after idling for 40 minutes and revving up the engine trying to get some movement.
Prior to replacing the tensioners the truck ran great. I have reason to believe the VCTs and cam position sensors are good. It looks like (to me) the PCM wants the phasers to move, but it isn't doing anything about it. Am I reading this correctly? Thanks
