I ordered my CHI 3V heads. They should be here next week. In the meantime, I started pulling apart my 400. In doing so, I checked the block casting #. I saw a DIF on the rear of the block near the oil pressure sender. There is what looked a date code. That is 2B8. I think that this is a good block.
I also checked the Cylinder head casting #. I found DIAE-GA on both heads. They are open chamber heads. At one time I thought that they were 66cc (K) heads, but since they came from a Torino, they were probably 75.4cc (J) heads.
The Detroit Iron Foundry block should be good, but what do you mean by "J" and "K" heads? If those are engine codes, my somewhat limited knowledge says "J" is a 429CJ with ram-air, and "K" is a 289HP, neither of which use the 335 head. All of the 400s got open chamber heads, and the D1AE heads should be pretty much the same as the Cleveland 2Vs, no markings in the corners and no thermactor holes. I'm sure they have the bumps in the exhaust ports though. Just to be nosey; does your DIF block have the screw-in plugs in the lifter valley?
These are 351C-4V heads. They were put on my 400 when I had it built. Their previous life was in a 1971 Torino, who knows for how long or where they were before that.
The 'J' and 'K' refers to notes in the NHRA technical bulletin for 1971. The 'J' heads are the open chamber 75.4cc heads(9.03:1CR). The 'K' heads are the 62.8cc closed chamber heads (10.7:1) and the 66.1cc 'Boss' heads(11.8:1 with the dome pistons).
The NHRA tech bulletin list D1AE-GA under note 'K' along with D0AE-N.
Does anyone have an easy method to 'cc' the chambers?
There are a set for sale on Ebay right now. The combustion chambers look just like mine.
Man, I completely missed the boat on my first post. As for the plugs, I have pics of a 71 400 DIF block with the plugs; just wanted to know if all DIFs had them or just the early runs. I'd like to have the block, but it'd take an act of congress to get it out and into a truck bed. And it would just be one more thing I'd trip over.
You are right they are closed chamber heads. I was expecting the closed chamber heads to be much smaller. When I look at Tom Monroe's book at the open chamber, I can see the difference. My total experience is with closed chamber heads, although my previous encounter was in the '70s.
So, I guess that they are 62.8cc. The CHI heads are 64cc, but that's OK because I am changing cams to a roller. The IVC on the new cam is 68 ABDC as compared to 72 ABDC on my present cam.
I couldn't find the heads you were talking about on eBay so I couldn't compare the chambers. At least you know how much yours are worth if you decide to sell them. If you think the closed chambers look big you oughta see the size of open chambers!
The sale is closed they went for $810.00. I am going to take the valves and springs out of mine and use them in the new heads. Then I will get them cleaned and magnafluxed and try to sell them.
I created a chamber collage in my files section a couple weeks ago. Hopefully the direct link works. I'm never sure.
Hint: The lower 6 are aftermarket aluminum and some of the images are repeats of the same chamber with modifications. http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/4DSrP9W...erCollage1.jpg
