Well if you don't need a truck for 4-6 months, prices are likely to be higher now than then. Plus your added mileage depreciation. I did a KBB bluebook estimate in November. Just did one the other day and it was about 3.2% less.

I ordered a 2022 on 11/24 and sold my 2019 a few weeks later. Fingers crossed I get the new one by the end of April. I was nervous about prices dropping over the next couple months and wasnt going to be trading in anyway since I ordered from a dealer out of state.

That was my intention being the dealer said he can’t lock in the price he just quoted me for mine he would have to reappraise it when my new one came in. I told him if it’s possible they can buy it from me now being I don’t need it and wait for the new one. Basically trying to get todays price not 4-6 months down the road and it depreciates any. Thats what I was asking if anybody else has done it like that.

For at least this year nothing is going to drop value. Commodities to build get more expensive by the week. Factor in some inflation and it’s pretty scary.

Ordered in April and dealer wanted my F150 then. Am I ever glad I said no. That would've been a long time without wheels considering I may get the new truck next month. I doubt I lost any value in the truck since April, and so does my sales guy but of course that will be re-evaluated when the new truck comes in.

As others mentioned, if you can wait until who knows when, go ahead. Even if you decide to hang onto your vehicle until the new one comes in, chances are, you will still get a great price for it... it doesn't look like the lots are going to suddenly overflow with vehicles again any time soon. However, if you do keep it, it will slightly depreciate over time and with extra mileage as compared to now, and of course you always run the risk of something happening to it, whether mechanical failures or just wrecking it.

Also, something else not mentioned yet, depending on what state you are in, if you "trade it in" when you purchase your new one, you could save on the new trucks taxes. I learned this the hard way... we "sold" our Pathfinder when we ordered the new truck... so by the time the new one came in there was no tax credit... had I waited and traded it in, I would have gotten a tax credit.

My dealer locked in my trade at 74k and told me regardless how long it takes my 2022 Dually to get here they will still honor the price. Not sure if it’s due to being a 2020 Dually and less than 6,000 miles that they know they’ll sell it for whatever they ask for it but I’m happy and already signed the paperwork so it’s all in writing.

I’m currently waiting on Vroom to come collect my old ride and the new one should be arriving at dealer within next month. I won’t need a truck from mid-January to mid-February because I’ll be out of country for work plus the tags expire end of January so it was an easy decision to let it go now.

I couldn’t get my dealer to go ahead and accept the trade or give me a value for it. If dealer were to be inline with what other local dealers and Carmax have offered I’ll still come out about $1000 better going with Vroom even with sales tax credit on trade coming into play.

My biggest worry was that dealer would low ball me on trade when new truck arrived and I didn’t want to rush trying to sell it to someone else. I wanted to completely remove this scenario from the equation.

I would suggest looking at Vroom, it’s been extremely easy so far and they offered about $4000 more than Carvana. Carvana was the lowest offer I had compared to Vroom, Carmax, and two local dealers.

I ordered a new truck at end of August, agreeing a trade-in value and total price for the new truck, including documentation & taxes.

After our final RV trip in the Fall, I handed the truck over to the dealer, as I didn't need it over the winter. Sales Manager gave me the same for the trade-in, as I paid him for it 6 yrs ago.

Please keep us posted on your experience with Vroom. I've heard some horror stories where they promise you one price, just to lower it once they have it in their possession and perform their "inspection".
At that point you are pretty much stuck.
Best of luck, I hope it works out. I may go this route also when it gets closer to my new trucks' arrival.
