Prolonging the inevitable
i was just “gifted” if you even want to call it that.
2006 ford E350 super duty 5.4.

It has 497000 miles on it
ORIGINAL MOTOR AND TRANS
1 owner since 198000
had the plugs changed once at that mileage
things I have done.
fpr
intake manifold gaskets
cleaned the TB
replaced MAF
new TPS
new canister purge valve
new vent valve
new plugs installed properly
replaced bad O2

ive got it running decent it’s a million times better than what I got it but now I have a P0301 I hear the injector clicking I have ground switching as it should at the connector swapped coil packs with know good one. Same code, it is running rich on that bank and I can smell almost raw gas in the exhaust smoke witch is white. It doesn’t act like a hg problem it’s intermittent smooth the rough, power then a turd. Like 5 on 5 off. Off you hammer on it it will get up and go still with the on off power band though. I’m at a loss please help.

497K ??? I'm surprised it hasn't just died.
Here's the causes of the P0301, at your mileage, I'll lay money on low compression, but the causes below are a good start Look for leaks etc, etc.
  • Faulty fuel injector
  • Vacuum leak
  • Low fuel pressure
  • Camshaft sensor defective
  • Crankshaft sensor defective
  • Engine timing off
  • Leaking head gasket
  • Low engine compression
  • Poor quality fuel

How can you honestly say that he has low fuel pressure or a bad crankshaft sensor??? Just stop with the blind guesses already.......geez.

To the OP: since you smell gas in the exhaust, you should check to see if the injector on cylinder #1 is bleeding down into the cylinder. Especially if the injectors are original. Also, just because you swapped coils doesn't mean the coil is being commanded on.

These are the standard steps to be performed when this code pops. I'm not saying he has low fuel pressure. So give you attitude and ego a break ok...

Well what an onslaught of being informed of all the worst case Scenarios. It needs chains obviously. Went to the scrapyard today. Found the fuel problem, not a fp issues as it has not dropped below 35 even at WOT.
Super leaky injectors, some janky connectors, Jesus you all have no faith, thank you to the gentleman whom actually hade some suggestions not just a bunch of who-bla. It’s running good now. This whole thing was a steep rapid learning curve. Hindsight is 2020, obviously there’s a lot of things that I wouldn’t of bought and put on the van had I known what I know now but I’m glad that I got to learn in the process.

The coil connector was firing I checked it with a test light. Ft is coming back to normal. not going to do a compression/ leak down test because you can pretty much bet your bottom dollar it’s not gonna have the factory compression rating that it is supposed to. Plus, when I did an Audible no fuel crank compression test it’s consistent in noise and revolutions. I thought that you guys would actually be kind of impressed that it made it this long not just blow away that somebody would be ignorant enough to put money into it like I did. Kinda pisses me off, people come here ford help not to be told what they already know about a 500000 mile motor.

Glad to hear that you solved your issue. I think most people's reactions to 497k is "WHOA!", but @Mike1 laid down a solid response with a checklist for you to start working through and @Djosbun just misread Mike's initial post. It's all good!

There was a guy in Ohio who went over 1 million miles on his 1997 E-250. It finally expired at just under 1.3M, original Triton engine, 1 Trans rebuild, original differential.

My bad. Thank you for the solid advice though. It’s more of a something is better thank nothing and I didn’t know how expensive it was going to be to fix the right way vs other small passenger cars. The damage to the wallet has been done… in total it was WAY to much for an old van. I fell like I would have been better off just putting a new motor in it from the start. But it seemed like it was so close to running right every time I replaced something.being not completely confident for what ever reason didn’t help. Also I would have gotten all my evap parts at the junk yard. All in all it’s better than walking and it can pull a trailer ect.
idk if I’m going to just ride this one out till the end or what the hell to do with it.i wouldn’t mind putting a motor in it. Just is it even worth it. If I had another mode of transportation I would sell it now. It still needs the suspension fully redone, new hub bearings, ew body/ motor mounts, new driver seat. No rust surprisingly What do you guys think?
