I planned to use 75W90 oil in my 3.03 trans & open differential.
I found Lucas Oil LUC10043 Oil SAE 80W-90 Heavy Duty Gear Oil on sale. Is the Lucas safe to use instead ?
No problem as it is close in viscosity. The W stands for winter use. The lower number is best for cold weather operation. The higher number is best for hot use. Where are you located?
My final decision for 3.03 transmission fluid. (until I find a less expensive substitute)
GEAR OIL, SAE 75w-90, Motorcraft Manual Transmission Fluid, Full Synthetic, GL-4, quart, replaces SAE 80W-90, API GL-4 spec specifically for manual transmissions, API GL-4 spec provides proper lubrication for synchronized manual transmissions without causing excessive wear on the brass blocker rings that an API GL-5 spec oil will do, This fluid is also backwards compatible with GL-3 spec fluids, Manual transmissions, especially Ford Top Loaders, are designed to need some amount of friction to mesh the synchros, Ford 3sM/T requires 2 pints, Ford Top Loader 4sM/T requires 4 pints, Borg Warner T-10 requires 3 1/2 pints, (2 pints = 1 quart), The GL-4 spec is not optimized for rear axles and a GL-5 spec oil should be used in that application, NOT for use in rear axle differentials
