So I have a 21' F250 CCSB Lariat Tremor with the 7.3. The shifting has been horrible, compared to my 17' 6.2, for quite a while now and has been to the shop twice. First dealership, at around 2500 miles, said nothing wrong, no codes and shifts as it should. Second dealership said not shifting properly and did a forced break in procedure and put it back in re-learn at around 8k miles. It seemed to shift correctly during the re-learn and I even noticed the mpg increase by .5mpg. After about a month it went right back to it's previous behavior and the .5mpg gain disappeared. This issues are harsh engagement, and hard shifting both up and down. Now these issues were at low speeds and seemed to happen mostly in parking lots during that type of driving. I'd be stopped, waiting in traffic to pull out and when the car in front of me moved I would lightly press on the accelerator to move up and the truck would try to shift from 1-3 very quickly and lunge forward to where if I didn't hit the brake I would hit the car in front of me. So now its back in the shop again at 10,100 miles and I was under the assumption that they were just going to change out the valve body because they said when I picked it up last time that if the forced break in didn't work that was the next step, but got the call today they are awaiting approval for a new transmission. Service writer mentioned something about a Ford Tech Forum where it seems that a new unit is the best option for what's going on.
So my question is for those that have had a new trans installed, did you have any issues afterwards. I'm almost in favor of having a new unit installed as apposed to having the current one opened up and parts thrown at it. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Not quite the person you are directing your question to but everything I’ve read about these trans is that the complexity is through the roof compared to traditional auto trans. There is a lot of training required to be able to rebuild these. So…. I believe I would prefer a new trans if I’m ever in this position vs having someone at the dealership (learn as they go) work on my transmission. Ps….six gears is enough, why did they have to mess with a good thing!
Oh man... I have had this same issue. did the relearn then the re-calibration of the 1-5 gear sets. Seemed good but my mileage dumped 1.5+mpg
Now I am starting to have she lower shifting issues and now 8 & 9 gears slacking.
I was hoping to wait till Spring because I don't have a car if it goes in the shop. I will need a 4x4 or AWD to get to work as I'm on the Storm team so I HAVE to be in !
I have plenty of empathy here as I've read several threads regarding this issue.
What I find surprising is the inconsistency with same years same transmission.....same parts.
My 2021 7.3 has shifted butter smooth since Dec of 2020 when purchased, way better than my 6-speed 6.2.
Would love to know the culprit.
I had absolutely zero issues with my 6.2 trans and hoped for the same with this one. I don't do a lot of highway driving but on the highway no issues. When I put the pedal to the floor it shifts butter smooth, best shifting trans I ever had in that scenario. But stop and start in town and parking lot driving it's almost dangerous. If someone else drove it who wasn't used to it, they would be in for a surprise when it lunges shifting from 1-3 at less than 5mph.
So I know the exact build date 11/7/20, because it was a special order. There are no TSB's for the transmission and no codes. Tech verified my complaints on test drive.
The only issue with trading it I can't get another one anytime soon and using X plan isn't as easy as it was when I purchased this one.
I think there is a new updated TSB for this issue. Involves replacing the valve body (I believe)
That's what the advisor initially said when I picked it up last time, that the valve body replacement was next. Then he mentioned about some forum the techs use and based upon that they went the new transmission route. Got the call yesterday that Ford approved the replacement trans. Adviser noted that there is a warehouse locally that stores these units so hopefully it won't take long to get one and have it installed. The dealership was also nice enough to switch me out of the hybrid car I initially got for a Navigator since we have some crappy weather coming.

Geez Louise, you don't need to trade it in. Just have them replace the transmission.
