Ford F350, 2011, Super Duty, diesel. 55,000 miles. So it's 11 years old now. Towing our trailer, as we have for 10 years, the DPF unit cooked itself into oblivion. Literally burned itself out from the inside. Total meltdown. Two sensors were also destroyed in the process. Ford says $5,900 for a new one, available in a month. I tow my fifth wheel toy hauler 4 times a year. That's all the towing I do. Seems whimpy to me. 55,000 miles and it's toast? What kind of voodoo is this? I'll be investigating more tomorrow. Seems Ford should help with some compensation on this one. As soon as the truck is fixed, we are trading it in on an F450. Still, what a waste of money repairing the DPF which I don't believe should have burned up. But what do I know.

Never heard of a DPF burning up, but they can get full of ash, getting clogged up in the process.
Sensor can go bad for sure, especially 11 year old ones.
Warranty on the DPF would be 8 years or 80K miles, so your truck is beyond the time on that.
And, I sure wouldn't let the dealer put a new one in, there are thousands of take off units out there from deleted trucks, probably pick up a whole used exhaust system for less than a grand, used to see them for about 500, but that's been a while.
I went a 150,000 miles on my 2011 before selling it. I put that many miles on in 5 years. No problems with DPF. Had to replace two of the sensor when I got up around 130,000 miles.
The substrate in a DPF doesn’t burn. It can break, but not burn. Even if it broke apart, the only thing that would happen is a freer flow.
Sounds a little fishy.

Vehicles over 8,500 lbs GVWR are only covered for 5 years/50k miles under the federal emissions warranty.
