10 speed cold weather temps

With the cold weather that recently settled on the Midwest, I noticed a change in how the 10 speed shifts in my 2022 7.3 F250. A quick bit of Googling indicates that other truck owners have noticed this with the 10R140. The specific change is a "bump" when it shifts up from 3rd (either to 4th or 5th). From what I've read, the TC lock up point + higher viscosity fluid causes the bump.

Upon noticing the change, I was curious to see what the tranny temps looked like. After a 10 min warmup in the driveway on a 28 degree morning, the engine was 180 and the tranny was 50 degrees. The transmission did not go above 130 degrees after 20 mins of driving which included 5-6 stops and then acceleration up to 60 mph. I am interested to know what other 10 speed owners are seeing for transmission temps in <30 degree weather.

Its 9 below where I'm at and with 1100 miles so far it seems to be shifting pretty smoothly.

Mine shifts as smooth as butter once warmed up, until then it holds the gears a little longer for each shift so you can feel it more, when it shifts, but it's not bad at all... The coldest this winter has been -41*C.

Thanks for the input. Any idea on initial running temps? My transmission staying around 130 degrees seems to be on the cool side.

Started up my truck this morning, -24*C/-11*F.
After 5 minutes of idling the tranys temp was -15*C/+5*F.
After 10 minutes of driving the tranys temp was 0*C/+32*F.
After 20 minutes of driving the tranys temp was +25*C/80*F, and, it finally shifted into 9th & 10th.
After 30 minutes driving the tranys temp was +43*C/116*F, and it didn't get any warmer for the rest of my 40 minute drive...

If my memory serves, in the summer, +25*C/80*F days, the tranys temps were mostly between +89*C/208*F and +98*C/226*F...

Haven't noticed a single glitch. It's been as low as 13 F and the truck, with almost 28K, on it hasn't changed it's character.

Very helpful information. It appears that my cold weather temps are in line. Besides the truck remaining in 8th for a while, would you say the shift characteristics are similar to warm weather driving ?

When it's cold, my Raptor would have a slight "hiccup" between a couple of gears and my F350 does the same. Once it gets warm, it never happens again.

One morning last week I started my 7.3 truck which had sat outside all night and the air temp was -30 F. It started right up (dual batteries are awesome). I drove empty for about and hour an half of mixed town and country driving and shifting was normal with maybe just slightly higher revs than normal. Trans temp never got above 125.

Seems to shift like it was in TH mode this morning, until it warmed up to +25*C/80*F... I went for another drive this afternoon, and the trany started out at +23*C/+76*F and it basically drove like it always does in normal mode & at the end of my drive it was up to +54*C/+129*F...

It is a substantial change in gearing when shifting from 1st to 3rd. When the elevated cold start idle is enabled, you are going to get a "lurch" on the shift. No way around it. As the motor and tranny warm, this effect is greatly reduced. That said, I do think the 10 speed shifts smoother after it is thoroughly warmed. My 10 speed is normally 190 to 205 in the summer. Now that it is often zero or less, the tranny is often in the 90 to 130 range.

Thank you all for the input. When I drove the truck today, the shift out of 3rd was actually more than a bump. There was a very noticeable hesitation right before the upshift. Almost like I tapped the brakes. I am going to contact the dealership to have them assess the situation.

Just ran into town. It is 15*F here. Wind chill -2*F.
~20 minute drive to town 55-60MPH, trans temp was 102*F when I arrived.
Temp was still in the low 90s when I got back in the truck about 30 minutes later.
Drove home and the trans temp maxed at 126*F.

Was -27 this morning was plugged in so drove 2 mins after starting up 2022 6.7, tranny was / has been sluggish for sure and would not come out of 9th until 70mph as was on highway 5 mins after startup, after 10-15 mins all was good. In this cold weather though engine takes 20-30 min on highway to reach full running temp. Bigger issue I’ve had is the drivers side floor vent is weak have to move feet to find the warm air.

There's a whole tread dedicated to that. The solution is to make a vent cover to direct the warm air downward to your toes. As is it blows up behind the dash.
