the outside door handle no longer opens the door because the little plastic coupler that snaps over the rod coming from the door handle broke. Is it possible to get a replacement plastic coupler (not sure of the actual name of the part)

You don't list which year Explorer/Mountaineer/Aviator this is for, but typically your local auto parts store will have a Door Lock Rod Clip assortment in the Dorman "Help!" section, such as Dorman Part No. 75450.

Good point. 94, first gen. I stopped at the local parts store and they had a box of assorted ones. When it warms up some I'll give it a try. Pretty tight space with the window track next to where I'm trying to work and it blocks my view.
