I have a 95 7.3 that has not been starting when it wants, the way im getting it to start is by disconnecting the main starter wire that connects to the starter and the little wire that connects to the starter that I assume goes to the ignition, ive tested both the starter and the solenoid, also just put a brand new relay in so im out of ideas, also it worked once when i jammed the shifter further into park but not only starts after disconnecting and reconnecting the starter wires, any ideas?
So I’m gathering it doesn’t even crank at these times? Never messed with an auto of these years but sounds like something loose in the shifter. Perhaps the brake switch not engaging fully?
no it just clicks once, the shifter is loose but ive gone underneath and moved the neutral safety switch while i had someone try and start it and nothing but a click
My '01 Mexpedition did similar by how your description sounds...bad shifter bushings, dropped the MLPS into gear per the switch. Took either into neutral to light off or pushing more vertical into park. Two new bushings and snugging all fasteners eliminated this issue.
Had a similar issue with my truck. Everything would work (internal lights, radio, blower), just wouldn't turn over. I checked to see if it was the starter by jumping the starter relay on the passenger side inner fender with 12v to the small post that isn't a red/light blue color. Prolly wouldn't hurt to see if you have power at the R/LB post with a volt meter when the key is in start position. That should energize the relay and allow power to go to the starter solenoid and turn over the truck. Once you know that works, follow the R/LB wire back to the Transmission Range Sensor (LHS of trans). My issue was that the connector wasn't secure and loose. Once I tightened that it started right up. If that doesn't work, follow the W/PK line coming out going to clutch pedal position switch jumper. That could be your issue. If not then from there it's either a bad #18 fuse or ignition switch. Could be a bad shifter mechanism as the guys stated above as well. You could rule that out by disconnecting the shifter linkage form the TRS and manually moving it. Not sure if this will help but it helped me. Good luck!
R/LB= Red Light Blue ( Red stripe on a Light Blue wire)
W/Pk= White pink I think (White stripe on a pink wire)
LHS = Left hand side ( Left hand side of trans from drivers seat)
I am pretty sure these are right . If not some one will chime in
I found that I'm not getting any reading on the main power wire that is on the starter, do you happen to know what gauge wire that is so i can run a new one, i appreciate all the help

If you are takling about the large cable that runs to the starter from the battery, it is 2 ought. The trigger wire from the fender relay to the starter in 14 ga. The large wire should be hot at all times, the trigger wire should only be hot when the key is turned to start. If it is in the budget, a complete new positive cable might be called for.
Another thought, are your battery terminals and posts shinny clean and tight? Black corrosion can build up between the battery posts and the terminals not allowing the juice from the batteries to get to the starter.
its 38 dgrees here, I just figured out that it will turn over when it is plugged in when i unplug it it wont turn over... does this make sense? ive never heard of that
