Front Window Contols

I have a 2019 XLT. We got caught in a pretty good downpour, and the inside of the drivers door got pretty wet. I dried everything pretty good, but maybe not good enough. The controls for the two front windows, the controls for the folding mirrors, the mirror extend, and the mirror adjust controls do not work. The rear window controls work fine. I checked the fuses that the book says go those controls, and they all look fine. Am I in for a new control unit?

Why were your windows down during a downpour?

I'll bet they will work again after given some time to dry.

I would probably try to take out the control unit and use something like a hair dryer set on low to make sure it's good and dry. It may start working again once you get it dried out.

The windows weren't down. It just got pretty wet in the time it took me to get in the truck. I dried them off right away.

They actually worked once, but then quit again.

I did take it out, but I saw no sign of being wet. I let it sit out for a bit, and shook it and stuff. No water or moisture came out at all.

I thought about WD-40, but didn't want to screw it up any more than it was.

And go figure...today while driving from Houston to San Antonio, they started working again. I didn't do much with them, as I didn't want to get a window stuck down, or the mirrors stuck closed going 75 mph down the Interstate. I'll check again tomorrow and see if everything is working. Thanks guys.

If you have an issue with an electronic component that may not be getting good contact try using electronic contact cleaner. It is made for electronics.

Actually, I have some of that also. I suppose I should have thought of that.

I would second this. Pull the controls, spray with the CRC electric cleaner stuff, dab of dielectric grease and plug everything back in. Personally, I wouldn't use WD-40, I don't think it would necessarily hurt the electronics, it is a water displacer but it would stink in the cabin. The CRC stuff will clean the contact points and is meant specifically for electronics so right tool for the job. Good luck hopefully things start working. I've had my controls pretty wet from the same type of situation, never had them stop working fortunately.

This issue appears to be resolved. They have been working fine now since my trip to San Antonio. Maybe they got good and aired out on the Interstate. Who knows. But they seem to all be working fine now. Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. That's what makes a good forum!

Interestingly I had this same issue with my 19 but it turned out to be a broken wire, as the window buttons didn't have have illumination either. Took the tech about a 16hrs to find the issue.

Well, it looks like I have to revive this thread. This issue has been an intermittent issue since I originally posted it. Sometimes the controls would go out, then come back. They seemed to go out after a car wash, which sounds odd, since the the controls do not get wet inside the truck. But then it would happen just at random times. Right now they are not working, and have not been for the last couple of days. I will check the fuses involved with these functions tomorrow, but It just doesn't sound fuse related. I will also look for a broken wire, as noted by stibuilder. But I'm open to other ideas if anyone has one.

If the problem is intermittent it is not caused by a blown fuse. There's a 99% chance this is due to a poor electrical connection of some type. Those can be caused by a loose wiring connector, corrosion on a connector (possibly from getting wet initially), or a broken wire as mentioned earlier. It is possible that the poor connection is at the fuse holder though so pulling and checking the fuse is still advised, just make sure to verify that the fuse is actually passing power instead of just "not blown".

I would pull the non-functioning switches, unplug them, clean with electric contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, reinstall, and test. I would also do the same with the plugs under the truck by the spare tire that others have had so many problems with just for good measure.

It's hard to narrow down the location of the issue for the mirrors because the switch on the drivers door is the only physical switch, but the windows are a little easier. When the switches on the drivers door don't work, can you still control the other windows with the switches on their respective doors? If yes, then the problem is isolated to the driver's door wiring or switch assembly. If no, then the issue may lie elsewhere possibly the plugs under the truck by the spare tire or even a glitch in the BCM.

Also back in the same boat, mine stopped working again about 8 weeks ago, just waiting on the next service to get it fixed. It was a broken wire before not sure if its the same one this time or not. For about a week the button control back lighting would flicker and such so I knew it was about to happen again and made sure not to roll my window down. Glad I got the Premium Care warranty.
