I have the same setup (8’ CC with B&W Companion). I set it up tilted toward the back (ie: puts camper further back) and have been pleased with how it tows. I can lower the tailgate and slide between the camper and truck (good for connecting 7 pin connector and Ford Yaw sensor). I believe the the 8 foot beds position the hitch holes more forward of the axle, so setting it 3” to the rear lines up with it being centered over the axle in my truck).
For the short-bed models, it seems the hitch is further to the rear of the truck, so using the 3” rear offset might be too far back past the rear axle centerline.
Most people I know have installed this particular hitch with it positioned more to the rear.
If you set it up one way and don’t like it, just flip the base and remount the small spring. Easy to do.
If I had an 8’ bed, I think I would try the 3” forward position. There would be no cab clearance problem like on my short bed. I have mine at the 1” forward position with no change to my front axle weight.
I used the Companion on the CCLB truck I just traded. There are 3 fore/aft positions. I set mine in the center initially and never changed it. Left room between tailgate and 5th and good cab clearance. Could hardly tell my 12.5K 5th wheel was there.
Axle centerline to bed rear is the same on the 8'2" bed as it is on the 6'5" bed, so is the hitch mounts, all the difference in bed length is to the front.
As to that hitch setup, I know you get more space behind with the hitch set back, but it's good to try and get some trailer weight onto the front axle of the truck, so I would set it forward.
